Chapter 15 - The Clearing After the Storm

The afternoon sun blazed down without mercy on the bare patch of earth where the house had stood just days before. Only a ragged pile of timber and rubble remained, waiting for the county haulers to clear the site completely. The air smelled of clean earth, pine needles, and fresh rain, devoid of the stale ash and smoke that had haunted the property for nearly two decades.
Mark wiped the dirt from his hands as he stood beside Clara, watching Lily run through the tall green grass near the lakeshore, laughing freely as she chased butterflies with her white stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her arm.
"The foundation is completely gone," Mark said, his voice laced with a profound sense of exhaustion and relief. "The county auditors took the vault contents this morning to distribute the recovered funds to the descendants of the families your father ruined."
"And the house across the water?" Clara asked, turning her head to look out across the calm, glassy surface of the lake where the abandoned weathered structure had stood.
Mark followed her gaze. Across the water, there was nothing left standing on the opposite shore except for a neat, quiet circle of newly planted wildflowers growing wild in the sunshine. The windows were gone, the broken wood was cleared away, and the pale little girl in the teal sweater was nowhere to be seen.
"She’s gone, Clara," Mark whispered, slipping his hand into hers and interlocking their fingers tightly. "They can finally rest now."

"We can rest too," Clara replied, leaning her head against his shoulder as a gentle breeze ruffled her blonde hair.
As they turned away from the lake to join their daughter on the green lawn, a single, pristine white feather drifted down from the clear blue sky, landing softly on the fresh earth right where the front doorway used to be—before dissolving into the wind without a trace.
