Chapter 8: The Apprentice of the Willow

For the next two years, Gregory Vance lived as an apprentice laborer at Shadow Creek.

His daily life was stripped of every vestige of executive pretension. He woke at five o'clock every morning, hauled thousands of willow cuttings down the steep ravines, built rock-check dams in the eroded gullies to prevent silt from entering the drinking water reservoirs, and learned the precise science of alpine soil remediation from Caleb.

His hands, once soft from air-conditioned offices, hardened into the tough, resilient hands of an honest mountain laborer.

Under Caleb’s demanding, patient supervision, Gregory learned how to handle a two-man crosscut saw, how to fell dead standing timber safely without damaging young saplings, and how to read the health of a forest by the moss on the bark and the clarity of the stream.

He worked until his muscles burned with honest exhaustion, until sweat washed away the memory of luxury leases and hollow corporate presentations.

He did not complain. When spring blizzards dumped four feet of wet snow on the greenhouse roofs, he was the first on the ladder with a wooden snow shovel at three in the morning; when the lower culvert clogged during torrential summer thunderstorms, he stood chest-deep in the freezing runoff, clearing rocks with an iron pry bar until the road was safe.

The young apprentices—who knew of his past arrogance—saw his genuine humility, his willingness to take the hardest tasks, and his total lack of self-importance. They welcomed him into their circle, sharing meals on the porch, teaching him how to identify alpine wildflowers, and treating him as a brother.

Gregory discovered a joy he had never known in his former life: the deep, clean peace of going to bed at night knowing that his hands had repaired what greed and neglect had damaged.
