Chapter 6: The Unraveling Of Trust

The harsh fluorescent lighting of the server room hummed softly, casting an antiseptic glow over the gleaming racks of computer equipment. Daniel stood blocking the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the entrance, while Clara leaned against the cold stone wall just outside, her chest heaving as she fought to regain her composure. The threat she had just thrown into the air hung heavily between them, smelling faintly of desperation and blackmail.
"My capital?" Daniel asked, his voice deceptively quiet as he stepped closer to her, refusing to let her see that her words had struck a nerve. "Everything I built was earned through legitimate corporate acquisitions and verified by federal auditors, Clara. You’re grasping at straws because your cruelty has finally caught up with you."
Clara let out a sharp, cynical laugh, crossing her arms over her trench coat. "Legitimate? Oh, Daniel, you always were the master of self-deception. Do you really think your uncle left you that initial venture capital out of pure affection? Or did you conveniently forget the document he signed the night before his stroke—the one that transferred the offshore holdings into your sole possession while he was heavily medicated?"
Daniel’s jaw tightened imperceptibly, a muscle ticking in his cheek. That transaction had been legal, overseen by a notary public, and entirely within the bounds of family agreements. Yet, hearing Clara weaponize a private family tragedy with such casual malice sickened him. It was typical of her entire existence in the Sterling household—using people's vulnerabilities as leverage for her own advancement.
"That matter was settled years ago, Clara," Daniel said firmly, refusing to engage with her toxic narrative. "You can threaten to air dirty laundry all you want, but the board cares about one thing: stability and profit. And your erratic, abusive behavior is the single greatest threat to both."
Before Clara could formulate another counterattack, the soft chime of an elevator bell echoed from the end of the hallway. The heavy brass doors slid open smoothly, revealing Arthur. The elderly attorney walked toward them at a steady pace, holding a thick manila folder securely beneath his arm. He looked at Clara with a profound sense of disappointment, as if viewing a tragic chapter of a book he had long wished to close.
"Good evening, Clara," Arthur said calmly, stopping a few feet away. "I’ve just finished notarizing the supplementary addendums for tomorrow morning’s agenda. Item number four explicitly outlines the legal consequences of hostile actions taken against an expectant mother within family-owned properties."

Clara’s face drained of what little color remained in it. She stared at the manila folder as if it were a physical death warrant. "You’re all conspiring against me," she whispered, her voice finally cracking with real fear. "This is a coup. Plain and simple."
"This is order restoring itself," Daniel corrected her, stepping past her into the server room to retrieve the security log backup. "Go pack your bags, Clara. When the sun comes up, your access to this estate is revoked permanently."
