Chapter 5: Midnight In The East Wing

The East Wing of the Sterling estate was rarely visited at night, its long corridors lined with portraits of ancestors whose stern eyes seemed to follow every passing footstep. Daniel moved swiftly through the gloom, his hand sliding along the cool wood paneling until he reached the heavy iron-reinforced door of the server room. The keypad on the wall glowed with a faint blue light, indicating that the system was active and functioning normally. To his immense relief, the green indicator light showed that the primary encryption lock had not yet been overridden from an external terminal.

Just as Daniel reached out to punch in his master administrator code, a sharp metallic click echoed from down the hallway. He froze, pulling back into the deep shadows cast by a towering marble bust of the estate’s founder. From around the corner stepped Clara, wearing a heavy trench coat over her red dress, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight, utilitarian ponytail. In her hand, she carried a portable hard drive wired to a sleek tablet device. Her face was flushed, her eyes darting nervously toward the server room door.

Clara muttered an oath under her breath as she approached the keypad, rapidly punching in a sequence of numbers. The red error light flashed angrily, accompanied by a low, rhythmic warning beep. She tried again, her fingers fumbling slightly with the plastic buttons as panic began to fracture her usual icy composure.

"Damn it, open," Clara hissed, hitting the metal casing with the palm of her hand.

Daniel stepped out from the shadows, his voice cutting through the quiet corridor like a blade. "Looking for something, Clara?"

Clara spun around, her breath catching in her throat. For a split second, sheer terror flashed across her features before she quickly masked it with a defiant, haughty glare. She clutched the tablet tightly against her chest, stepping back until her spine hit the cold stone wall.

"You have no right to lock me out of the administrative network, Daniel," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound commanding. "I am still a registered stakeholder in this family trust, whether you like it or not. Move aside."

"You lost your right to manage anything in this house the moment you took those scissors to Elena," Daniel replied coldly, closing the distance between them with slow, measured steps. "The board meeting is in eight hours, Clara. The digital archives are secure, the physical copies are locked away, and your little reign of terror is officially over."

Clara’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She knew she had lost the digital battle, but desperation breeds reckless calculation. "You think the board cares about a bit of hair?" she laughed bitterly. "They care about scandals, Daniel. And if you think I’m going down alone, you severely underestimate what I know about how you acquired your initial capital."
