Chapter 7: Dawn at the Towers

The morning sun cast a cold, steely light across the glass and steel facade of Sterling-Vance Tower downtown. Julian stepped out of a sleek black town car, adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white shirt beneath his tailored black suit. He carried a heavy leather briefcase containing the stolen journals, the toxicological reports, and the vintage iron key wrapped in a clean linen cloth. As he strode through the revolving glass doors, the security guards nodded respectfully, conditioned to revere the Vance name, completely unaware of the storm brewing just beneath the surface of his calm exterior.

Up on the forty-second floor, the executive boardroom was already abuzz with activity. Board members in expensive suits murmured quietly over cups of artisanal coffee, reviewing the thick packets of merger documents placed at each seat. Elena sat at the head of the long mahogany table, immaculate in a sharply tailored cream-colored pantsuit that mirrored the aesthetic of the dress she had worn the previous afternoon. Her diamond necklace caught the morning light as she reviewed a spreadsheet, her expression a masterpiece of corporate confidence and serene authority.

When Julian pushed the heavy frosted glass doors open and stepped into the boardroom, the ambient chatter died instantly. All eyes turned toward him. It was rare for Julian to attend these formal sessions, let alone arrive with an aura of such calculated intensity. Elena looked up, her expression tightening for a brief second before she recovered her serene mask. She offered a polite, condescending smile, welcoming her stepbrother to the meeting and suggesting he take a seat near the back so the adults could finalize the multi-million-dollar merger without unnecessary distractions.

Julian did not move toward the back. Instead, he walked slowly down the length of the long mahogany table, his boots clicking softly against the expensive wool carpet. He stopped directly across from Elena, resting his large hands on the polished wood surface. He looked around the room, meeting the gaze of each influential stakeholder in turn. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with an inexplicable tension. Elena’s smile finally faltered, replaced by a cold, appraising stare as she demanded to know what game he was playing before the security team was summoned to escort him out.
