Chapter 6: The Midnight Infirmary

Leaving the grand corridors behind, Julian made his way down to the damp, sub-level medical quarters where Arthur had taken Clara. The room was sterile, lit by a harsh fluorescent tube that hummed softly in the quiet night. Clara was seated on the edge of a narrow cot, an ice pack pressed gently against her swollen cheek. Arthur stood near the door, quietly pouring a cup of herbal tea from a small electric kettle. When Julian entered, Clara flinched instinctively, her eyes wide with lingering terror, before she recognized the tall man in the black suit.

Julian closed the door softly behind him, pulling up a metal folding chair and sitting down so he was at eye level with the young maid. He spoke in a measured, gentle tone, thanking her for her bravery and assuring her that she was safe from Elena’s reach for the remainder of the night. Clara shook her head, tears spilling over her lower lashes as she explained that Elena controlled the local police through generous donations and old political alliances. Simply handing over the key and the documents would not be enough if the legal system itself was compromised by wealth and corruption.

Arthur chimed in quietly, supporting Clara’s assessment. The aging butler had served the Vance family for over thirty years, watching three generations rise and fall. He revealed that Clara was not the first employee to be targeted; two other maids who had asked too many questions about the late master's sudden illness had mysteriously vanished with generous severance packages and strict non-disclosure agreements enforced by corporate security. Arthur placed the steaming cup of tea in Clara's trembling hands, his face lined with the heavy burden of complicity through decades of passive silence.

Julian listened intently, his respect for the two staff members growing with every word. He realized that confronting Elena through conventional legal channels within the county would be an uphill battle against deeply entrenched power structures. Instead, they needed a public forum—one where Elena’s corporate allies could not look away or sweep the scandal under the rug. The upcoming board meeting at Sterling-Vance headquarters was the ideal arena. With the toxicological report and the signed journals, Julian held the definitive proof needed to dismantle Elena’s corporate illusion in a single morning.
