Chapter 6 - The Fine Print

The heavy double doors closed behind the federal marshals as they hauled Victoria out into the flashing lights of the courtyard, leaving a stunned silence in the grand ballroom. The remaining guests slowly began to filter toward the exits, eager to distance themselves from the crumbling Sterling empire. Marcus Vance lingered near the base of the grand staircase, nervously adjusting his cuffs as he looked up at Sylvia, who was now descending the marble steps with measured, deliberate strides.

"Sylvia," Marcus began, his voice dripping with oily conciliation. "None of us knew what Victoria was doing. We were just following corporate directives. The board is entirely at your disposal to restore stability."

Sylvia stopped three steps above him, looking down with cold, calculating eyes. "You signed off on every fraudulent asset transfer for the past three years, Marcus. Your signature is right beneath Victoria’s on the third-quarter audit."

Marcus swallowed hard, his face turning pale. "That was under duress. She threatened to ruin my family."

"Then you should know how it feels," Sylvia replied softly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, holding it up so the blue LED light reflected in his panicked eyes. "This contains every encrypted communication between you and Victoria regarding my father’s medical records. The Department of Justice already has a mirrored copy."

Marcus lunged forward, desperate to snatch the drive, but two private security guards—ones loyal to the original Sterling estate rather than Victoria’s board—materialized behind him, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced ease.

"You can't do this!" Marcus snarled, straining against the grip. "Without me, the board will vote to liquidate the hotel group by morning! You'll be left with a bankrupt shell!"

"Let them liquidate," Sylvia said, walking past him toward the executive exit. "I’d rather burn it to the ground and build something real from the ashes than let vultures pick at my family's legacy."

She pushed through the heavy doors into the cool night air, ignoring the flashing camera bulbs of reporters who had already gathered outside the cordoned-off perimeter. Her grey jeans were still stained with dirt, and the cut on her temple throbbed in rhythm with her pulse, but she walked with her shoulders back and her head held high.

Julian hurried after her, holding a heavy leather briefcase against his chest. "Sylvia, wait! The emergency board meeting is scheduled for 8:00 AM. If you don't show proof of majority ownership before the market opens, the creditors will force a Chapter 11 filing."

Sylvia stopped at the edge of the limestone steps, looking out over the city skyline where the neon sign of the Sterling Grand flickered against the dark sky. "Let them file. My father’s true will isn't in the corporate vault, Julian."

Julian frowned, adjusting his glasses in the glare of a police cruiser’s spotlight. "Then where is it? Victoria searched every inch of the estate."

Sylvia reached up, her fingers brushing the "SV" pendant hanging from her neck. She twisted the bottom of the gold letter, and with a soft click, the small pendant popped open like a miniature locket. Inside was not a photo, but a microscopic micro-SD card coated in industrial resin.

"She forgot to check the heirloom," Sylvia whispered.

Before Julian could respond, a dark unmarked sedan pulled up sharply to the curb, its rear door swinging open to reveal a figure stepping out into the rain.
