Chapter 10 - The Militia's Trap

"Drop the journal!" the lead guard shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls as he leveled his weapon at Sylvia’s head.

Julian threw his hands up in the air, instantly retreating toward the far corner of the room, trembling violently. Elena didn't move an inch; she simply crossed her arms over her trench coat, her gaze fixed coldly on the corporate mercenaries.

Sylvia stood her ground before the open wall safe, holding Arthur Sterling’s leather-bound journal against her chest with one hand while her other hand gripped the gold "SV" pendant. The red laser sights of a dozen rifles danced across her white tank top, painting her bruised skin in tiny, ominous dots.

"You're trespassing on corporate property under an active asset freeze," the guard captain barked, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "Hand over the contents of the safe, or we use lethal force under emergency shareholder defense clauses."

Sylvia looked past the barrels of the guns, staring directly into the chest-mounted body camera of the lead guard. "Check your transmission feeds, captain," she said, her voice entirely devoid of fear. "You're broadcasting live to every federal regulatory agency currently auditing this building."

The captain hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickering toward the blinking red recording light on his collar mount. "That's a bluff. The local network relays were severed during the blackout."

"Were they?" Sylvia asked calmly.

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone on the conference table lit up again, not with a call, but with a high-pitched data transmission tone. Across the room, the wall-mounted digital stock tickers flashed from green to a solid, warning amber, overriding their normal display with a federal seizure notice issued by the Department of Justice.

The security guards' earpieces crackled simultaneously with static, followed by a harsh, synthesized voice ordering them to stand down under penalty of federal obstruction charges.

The captain’s face went pale. He lowered his rifle by a fraction of an inch, his eyes darting between Sylvia and his vibrating radio unit. "Orders are orders," he muttered, gripping his weapon tighter. "The board is still my employer."

"The board doesn't exist anymore," Elena said, stepping smoothly between Sylvia and the armed guards. She pulled a heavy manila envelope from her coat and tossed it onto the mahogany conference table. "Federal Judge Harrison signed the dissolution order at 5:00 AM. Every contract signed by Victoria Sterling and her proxy board since yesterday evening is legally null and void."

The guards looked at each other in confusion. The captain stepped forward, snatched the envelope from the table, and ripped it open. His eyes scanned the official court seal stamped in raised blue ink at the bottom of the document.

"This... this can't be processed this fast," the captain stammered, lowering his rifle completely.

"My father planned for every contingency," Sylvia said, stepping forward from the safe, her bruised face catching the harsh morning light. She looked every bit the true heir to the Sterling empire. "Now lower your weapons and leave this floor before I have you charged as co-conspirators in a federal murder investigation."

The guards didn't hesitate any longer. One by one, they lowered their rifles, turned on their heels, and hurried back into the private elevator, leaving the doors sliding shut behind them with a muffled click.

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down the wall until he sat flat on the carpet. "We actually survived."

"We haven't won yet," Sylvia said, flipping open Arthur Sterling’s journal to the final, dog-eared page. "Look at this entry. It's not just a journal. It’s a bank routing number."

Elena leaned over the desk, squinting at the faded ink. "That’s not a standard routing code. That’s the code for the central Swiss clearinghouse."

Before they could examine the numbers further, the emergency fire alarms throughout the penthouse suddenly began to wail, drowning out the silence of the morning with a deafening shriek.
