Chapter 4

The silence in the penthouse boardroom stretched so long that the distant hum of city traffic below sounded like a distant ocean. Chloe stood frozen near the massive glass window, her fingers clutching her gold bracelet so hard the metal bit into her wrist. The reality of the situation was beginning to seep through the layers of denial she had built around herself since the day she met Richard.

"You lied to me," Chloe said, her voice dropping from a furious shriek to a harsh, trembling whisper. She looked down at her beige strapless mini dress, an outfit bought with funds that apparently belonged to the very corporation now sitting in judgment over them. "You told me you built this company from the ground up. You told me you were the sole owner."

Richard slumped further into his leather chair, looking smaller than he ever had in the months they had spent together. "I had to, Chloe. If I didn’t look the part, you wouldn’t have looked twice at me. You wanted luxury, status, a man who could give you the world. I gave you a front row seat to a house of cards because I couldn't bear the thought of losing you."

"Don't flatter yourself with romantic martyrdom, Richard," Eleanor said, her tone devoid of pity as she reopened her portfolio. "You didn't lie out of star-crossed love. You lied because you are a fraud, much like the woman who just threw coffee on my jacket."

Chloe whipped her head around, her defensive instincts flaring up again despite the shock. "Don't you dare talk to me like that! I didn't know anything about his shady business dealings! I am just an innocent bystander in all of this!"

"Innocent?" Eleanor raised an eyebrow, sliding a single printed photograph across the polished mahogany table toward Chloe. "Is an innocent bystander someone who routinely berates the housekeeping staff, demands complimentary penthouse upgrades by threatening employees with termination, and charges three hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized luxury goods to the corporate subsidiary account in a single quarter?"

Chloe stared down at the photograph. It was a receipt bearing her signature, authorizing the purchase of diamond earrings charged directly to the hotel’s asset management fund. Her face burned hot, the anger returning not as strength, but as panic.

"That was a perk! Richard said I had an unlimited entertainment budget!" Chloe protested, her voice rising again.

"Richard didn't have an unlimited budget; he had corporate oversight that I was systematically ignoring while I evaluated his leadership potential," Eleanor corrected her calmly. "I gave him enough rope to hang himself, and he brought you along as decorative dead weight."

Richard flinched at the harshness of the description, but he offered no defense. He knew Eleanor’s reputation. She was the granddaughter of the hotel’s founder, a woman who had stepped away from daily operations years ago to manage global philanthropic ventures, only to return when internal audits flagged catastrophic financial irregularities. She was not someone who negotiated; she was someone who extracted tolls.

"What happens now?" Richard asked quietly, staring at the polished wood of the table.

Eleanor leaned forward, resting her elbows on the armrests. "Now, Richard, we begin the process of recovering every single cent you misappropriated."
