Chapter 14

Three hundred miles away, the autumn air was crisp and smelled of damp earth, fallen maple leaves, and woodsmoke curling from neighborhood chimneys. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon of the quiet midwestern college town, painting the brick storefronts of Main Street in warm shades of amber and gold.

Chloe walked down the sidewalk carrying a canvas grocery bag filled with basic staples—loaf of bread, milk, apples, and a small notebook for her new classes. She wore her faded jeans, sturdy work boots, and the simple canvas jacket, her blonde hair tucked neatly into a knitted cap against the morning chill.

She stopped in front of a modest, two-story brick building with a wooden sign hanging above the entrance: Miller & Associates Administrative Services. It wasn't a luxury hotel with Italian marble floors and brass elevators. It was a local accounting and business consulting firm that specialized in small-business development for working-class families.

Two days ago, Chloe had walked into that office, dropped off a resume detailing her administrative skills from her college years before she got sidetracked by the illusion of high-society luxury, and interviewed directly with the senior partner, an older woman named Martha whose kindness reminded her faintly of Eleanor’s unshakeable composure.

"You don't have much recent corporate experience on here," Martha had said, looking over Chloe’s sparse resume with sharp, observant eyes.

"I have a lot of experience managing things that looked expensive on the outside while falling apart on the inside," Chloe had replied honestly, her voice steady and clear. "I’m looking to learn how to build something real."

Martha had studied her face for a long, silent moment before sliding a paperwork packet across the desk. "We start at seven in the morning, the pay is modest, and the coffee comes from a drip machine in the breakroom. Can you handle that?"
