Chapter 5: The Glass Ceiling Cracks

The private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse foyer as Richard stepped out, his long stride carrying him straight toward the mahogany study. Lily walked beside him, clutching her backpack like a shield. The apartment was eerily quiet, but the heavy atmosphere of a corporate board meeting hung in the air. Through the open double doors of the study, Richard saw Arthur Vance, senior legal counsel for Sterling Enterprises, sitting at his desk. Arthur was systematically shuffling through a stack of blue-backed legal folders while Eleanor stood by the window, her silhouette sharp against the Manhattan skyline.

Arthur looked up as Richard entered, adjusting his rimless glasses with an air of practiced indifference. "Ah, Richard. Perfect timing. Mrs. Sterling was just briefing me on the restructuring of the minor trust. Given Miss Clara’s unauthorized departure, the board deems it necessary to consolidate all discretionary funds under the main corporate umbrella."

Eleanor turned slowly, her face a mask of absolute authority. "We are simply protecting the family's assets from outside interference, Richard. Clara’s bloodline is volatile. We cannot have Sterling capital funding vagrancy or frivolous lawsuits in the Midwest."

Richard walked right past the lawyer and stopped two feet away from his mother. His height gave him a distinct physical advantage, but it was the cold, unyielding fire in his eyes that made Eleanor pause. He didn't raise his voice; every word was delivered with lethal precision.

"Arthur, pack your files and leave," Richard said coldly. "Now."

Arthur blinked, looking between mother and son in disbelief. "Mr. Sterling, I take my directives from the board chair—"

"I am the board chair's only living heir, and the primary trustee of these accounts," Richard interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. "If you don't walk out that front door in the next sixty seconds, I will personally strip you of your partnership and audit every billable hour you've fraudulently charged this family since 2015."

Arthur swallowed hard, glanced at Eleanor’s stony profile, and quickly gathered his papers into his leather briefcase. Without another word, the lawyer hurried out of the room, the heavy oak doors swinging shut behind him.

Eleanor didn't flinch, though a muscle in her jaw twitched. "You think a petty threat makes you a patriarch, Richard? You have hidden behind my shadow for thirty years. Without me, without this empire, you are nothing more than an aging architect playing with blocks."

May you like

"Maybe so," Richard replied, stepping closer until he towered over her. "But I am Lily’s grandfather, and her father. And unlike you, I remember what love feels like. You can keep your towers, Eleanor. You can keep your boardroom and your cold marble floors. But you will never touch Clara's daughter again."

Before Eleanor could formulate a scathing retort, Richard turned to Marcus, who stood quietly in the doorway. "Take Lily to the guest suite on the east wing. Pack her clothes, her books, and those shoes. We are moving out tonight."
