Chapter 10: The Fixer's Ultimatum

Victoria Vance stood in the sunlit foyer of the Maplewood estate, her sharp eyes scanning the faded floral wallpaper and antique furnishings with undisguised contempt. She had served Eleanor Sterling for nearly three decades, acting as the blunt instrument for family disputes, corporate espionage, and quiet disappearances.
Richard closed the heavy front door slowly, turning to face her with an expression of absolute calm. "You're trespassing, Victoria. This property is privately deeded to my name, and I haven't invited you in."
Victoria let out a dry, humorless laugh, pulling a crisp manila document from her leather portfolio. "Property lines mean very little, Richard, when the funds used to maintain them trace back to corporate accounts currently under audit for embezzlement and mismanagement. Mrs. Sterling has already filed an emergency injunction with the state Supreme Court, freezing every asset associated with your name—including this dilapidated relic."
From the doorway of the parlor, Lily peeked out, clutching her canvas backpack tightly against her chest. Richard stepped back slightly to block the little girl from view, his eyes locking onto the fixer with cold intensity.
"My father bought this estate with his personal inheritance three years before Sterling Enterprises was even incorporated," Richard said, his voice dropping an octave. "You and Eleanor know damn well that audit won't hold up for twenty-four hours once a judge looks at the original deeds."
"By the time a judge looks at anything, Richard, your corporate reputation will be shredded beyond recognition," Victoria countered, stepping closer. "The board has already voted to strip you of your vice-presidency. Effective nine o'clock this morning, you are officially a non-entity in the Sterling empire. But Mrs. Sterling is willing to offer you a way out."
"I'm listening," Richard said, keeping his tone measured.
"You sign the full, unconditional guardianship surrender for the child, handing all custody rights over to Eleanor," Victoria recited smoothly, as if reading from a script she had practiced a hundred times. "In exchange, the board drops the embezzlement inquiry, restores your personal credit lines, and grants you a quiet, salaried retirement package in Florida. You can live out your days in the sun, undisturbed."
Richard stared at the fixer, feeling a cold wave of disgust wash over him. They still thought he was the same weak man who had let them break Clara twenty-five years ago. They thought love could be bartered for stocks and a comfortable exile in Florida.
"Tell Eleanor her offer is missing one crucial element," Richard said softly.
Victoria raised an eyebrow. "And what is that?"
"My foot up her expensive, tailored ass," Richard replied, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Get off my property, Victoria. And if you ever come within five hundred feet of my granddaughter again, I won't bother calling the lawyers. I'll call the police."

Victoria’s professional mask slipped for a split second, revealing a flash of genuine shock before her face hardened back into a stone mask. She tossed the manila envelope onto the antique console table by the door. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Richard. You can't beat the house."
"This isn't a casino," Richard said, pulling the heavy front door wide open. "It's a home. Now get out."
