Chapter 4

The tension in the grand foyer reached a suffocating apex. Arthur’s face flushed a mottled crimson as he interpreted Julian’s calm demeanor as insolence. The security guard planted his feet wider on the marble floor, shifting his weight to prepare for a physical confrontation. He reached instinctively for the heavy metal flashlight clipped to his duty belt, convinced that a display of brute force was the only language this trespasser would understand.
“I’m giving you one last warning,” Arthur snarled, taking a threatening step forward, his broad chest nearly pressing against Julian’s worn brown jacket. “Turn around and walk out those double doors, or you’ll be spending the night in a holding cell.”
Julian did not blink. His breathing remained slow, measured, and entirely unhurried. With deliberate slowness, he reached up with his left hand and gripped the brim of his dirty cap. The gesture was executed with a quiet theatricality that commanded absolute attention. With a smooth, upward motion, he lifted the cap from his head and tucked it beneath his arm, exposing his full face to the harsh light of the crystal chandelier for the first time since he had crossed the threshold.
Without the shadow of the cap hiding his brow and cheekbones, the resemblance became impossible to ignore. The sharp, aquiline nose, the distinct shape of the jawline, and, most undeniably, the piercing, pale-blue eyes were carbon copies of the bronze bust of the estate’s founder that sat upon a mahogany pedestal in the executive library just down the hall.
Clara gasped softly, her hand flying to cover her mouth to suppress a cry of sheer astonishment. She stared at the man’s face, tracing the familiar features that she had studied in oil paintings and family portraits every single week. It was him. Julian Blackwood, the estranged only son and legal heir who had vanished from public life three years ago following the mysterious death of his father and the hostile corporate takeover orchestrated by the current board of directors.
Arthur, lacking Clara’s intimate familiarity with the household history and blinded by his own prejudices, remained entirely oblivious. He saw only a man taking off a dirty hat.

“Oh, taking off your cap now? Think that makes you look polite?” Arthur sneered, raising his hand to shove Julian backward. “I don't care if you take your whole outfit off—get out!”
Julian caught Arthur’s wrist mid-push. The grip was ironclad, effortless, and instantaneous. Arthur’s momentum halted dead in its tracks. The security guard tried to yank his arm back, but his wrist remained locked in Julian’s hand as if caught in a vice of solid steel. Arthur’s arrogant expression flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by sudden, unadulterated confusion as he looked down at the impossible strength of the man he had just threatened.
