Chapter 9: The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Brooks Tower in downtown Seattle offered a panoramic view of Elliott Bay gleaming under a crisp afternoon sun. Yet inside the glass-walled conference room, the atmosphere was thick with tension and hostility. Seated around the polished granite table were four men in expensive tailored suits: corporate directors appointed during Clara’s brief tenure as proxy chairwoman, men whose loyalty had been bought with consulting fees and backroom promises.

At the head of the table sat Marcus Sterling, a corporate fixer with slicked-back gray hair and a perpetual, condescending smirk. He tapped a Montblanc pen against the granite surface as the heavy oak doors swung open.

Hannah walked into the room with calm, measured steps, her posture upright and unyielding, dressed in her tailored navy blazer. Behind her walked Arthur Pendelton, carrying his heavy leather briefcase, and Chloe, who carried a slim portfolio containing the verified trust documents.

"Well, well," Marcus said, not bothering to stand up. "If it isn't the prodigal daughter. I thought we made it clear last week during probate filings that you have no standing in this corporation, Miss Brooks. Security should have escorted you out in the lobby."

"Security was otherwise engaged, Mr. Sterling," Arthur said smoothly, pulling out the chair to the right of the head of the table and seating himself with deliberate slowness. "And as for standing, I suggest you turn to page four of the corporate governance packet my firm delivered to your office twenty minutes ago."

Marcus sneered, picking up the heavy parchment packet and skimming the first few lines. His arrogant smirk instantly faltered. The color drained from his ruddy cheeks as his eyes scanned the certified seal of the Washington State Supreme Court and the forensic audit report detailing illegal asset stripping.

"This is an absurd fabrication," Marcus blustered, slamming the document down onto the table. "Clara Brooks was legally appointed as primary proxy by unanimous board consent six months ago. These emergency injunctions are baseless!"

"Clara Brooks has fled the state and is currently the subject of an active federal investigation for wire fraud and forgery," Hannah said, her voice cutting through the room with absolute authority. She stood at the opposite end of the granite table, leaning forward slightly with her hands flat on the surface. "And every single board resolution passed under her tenure—including your consulting contracts and the unauthorized sale of subsidiary assets—has been declared null and void under Contingency Clause Delta of the original Brooks family trust."

One of the other directors, a younger man named David Vance—Julian’s cousin—stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward. "You can't do this! We have binding contracts! We control fifty-one percent of the voting shares!"

"You control fifty-one percent of voted shares, David," Arthur corrected him smoothly, pulling a thick stack of certified proxy revocations from his briefcase. "Issued by shareholders whose signatures were forged or obtained under fraudulent misrepresentation concerning Arthur Brooks’s medical status. Here are the sworn affidavits from three major institutional investors who have rescinded their proxies as of this morning."

David stared at the papers in horror. The house of cards was collapsing in real time.

"Meeting adjourned," Hannah announced, standing up straight and looking each man in the eye. "Effective immediately, all corporate credit cards issued under executive discretionary funds are frozen. You have one hour to clear your desks and leave this building. If I see any of you attempting to access company servers or transfer funds before the forensic audit is complete, my attorney will personally hand these federal indictments to the U.S. Attorney’s office before dinner."
