Chapter 5: Reclaiming the Hearth

Clara’s face contorted with outrage at Hannah’s offer of conditional shelter, as if she had just been offered scraps from a prison mess hall. "Stay? In my house? We are not guests here, you arrogant little—"
"It is not your house, Clara," Hannah interrupted, her voice cutting through the older woman's tirade with absolute finality. She stepped forward, smoothing the front of her green wrap dress, shedding the last remnants of the frightened girl who had been screamed out of the dining room twenty minutes ago. "The documents Arthur provided are clear. Effective immediately, I am exercising my rights as primary trustee. Clara, you have twelve hours to gather your personal belongings. Julian, your employment with Brooks Enterprises is terminated as of five minutes ago. Security codes, master keys, and all corporate tokens must be surrendered to Mr. Pendelton before you leave the property."
Julian stepped back, shaking his head. "You can't just fire me. There’s a severance clause in my employment contract approved by the board."
"A board that you packed with your own cousins and rubber-stamped without quorum?" Arthur asked, snapping his briefcase shut with a sharp metal click. "Mr. Vance, I audit forensic accounts for a living. Your cousin Leo hasn't practiced corporate law in six years, and his signature on the board minutes from last November is a clumsy tracing job that a first-year law student could spot from across the room."
The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. He looked like a man who had just realized the floorboards beneath him were made of rotten timber. Without another word, he turned on his heel, grabbed his overcoat from the mahogany coat rack, and practically sprinted toward the front door, bursting out into the cold rain without waiting for an umbrella.
Clara watched him leave, her bravado finally cracking. The rigid posture she had maintained throughout the evening slumped, her shoulders sagging under the weight of total defeat. She looked at Chloe, then back at Hannah, her eyes no longer filled with fire, but with a cold, bitter resignation.
"You think you’ve won something, Hannah," Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "This house is an albatross. The property taxes are past due, the maintenance on the foundation is three hundred thousand dollars behind, and the IRS has an ongoing audit regarding the offshore holdings your father set up in the nineties. You didn't inherit an empire. You inherited a sinking ship."
With that, Clara turned and marched up the grand staircase, her blue lace dress sweeping regally behind her despite the humiliating defeat. Chloe lingered for a moment, looking at Hannah with wide, uncertain eyes, before whispering a quiet, "I'm sorry," and following her mother up the steps.

Arthur turned to Hannah, offering a faint, approving smile. "She’s right about the taxes, you know. Your father left you a fight. But he also left you the tools to win it."
Hannah looked around her childhood home, taking a deep breath of the cedar-scented air. "Then let's get to work."
