Chapter 4: Shadows at the Window

The afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, ominous shadows across the suburban lawn as twilight settled over the neighborhood. Inside the house, the atmosphere had grown oppressive and heavy. Martha had stopped banging on the vault door to conserve her energy, but the periodic scrape of her metal tool against the interior wall reminded Clara that her mother was wide awake, resilient, and furious. Clara sat at the kitchen table in the dim light, her green button-down shirt damp with nervous sweat. She stared at her phone, terrified that a text message from a relative or a call from a neighbor would pierce the oppressive silence. Suddenly, the sharp chime of the front doorbell rang out through the house. Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. Lily looked up from her spot on the living room rug, her blonde hair catching the faint light from the hallway. The doorbell rang a second time, accompanied by the familiar voice of Mrs. Gable, their next-door neighbor, calling out through the screen door. "Clara? Are you home? I brought over those extra gardening tools your mother asked for." Clara stood up slowly, her legs feeling like lead. She walked cautiously toward the front entryway, her heart hammering against her ribs. Peering through the small glass pane of the front door, she saw Mrs. Gable standing on the porch, holding a wicker basket of tools and looking expectantly toward the house. Clara unlocked the door just an inch, keeping the security chain securely fastened. "Oh, hi, Mrs. Gable," Clara said, forcing a brittle, unnatural smile onto her face while keeping her voice as steady as possible. "Thank you so much. I'm actually not feeling well today, and neither is Mom. She's resting in her room." Mrs. Gable frowned, sensing the strange tension in the air. "Is everything alright? I thought I heard a heavy thud from this direction earlier." Clara’s stomach dropped, but she managed a tight laugh. "Just some remodeling work in the basement. Everything is fine. Thanks again." She quickly closed the door, sliding the deadbolt home with trembling hands, knowing that her hasty lie had only bought her a few hours of fragile safety before suspicions deepened further.
