Chapter 10: Breach of the Fortress

The two police officers moved through the hallway with practiced efficiency, their boots echoing sharply against the hardwood floor. Clara stood immobilized near the entrance, her green button-down shirt damp with cold sweat, watching helplessly as her nightmare materialized in real time. Lily peeked out from the hallway, her blonde hair and white patterned dress standing out against the somber backdrop of the unfolding drama. "Where is the interior security vault located, ma'am?" the lead officer demanded, his voice devoid of any warmth. Clara pointed a trembling finger toward the dark metal door set seamlessly into the interior wall, unable to form a coherent sentence. The officers approached the reinforced barrier, noting the heavy brass keyhole and the thick steel frame. "Open it," the officer ordered, turning his gaze sharply back toward Clara. With tear-filled eyes and a suffocating sense of defeat, Clara reached into her pocket, pulled out the heavy brass key, and handed it over with shaking fingers. The officer inserted the key into the lock, turning it with a heavy, satisfying mechanical click that echoed like a thunderclap in the quiet house. He pulled the thick metal handle, and the heavy vault door swung slowly open, releasing a rush of stale, cool air trapped inside for hours. Stepping back, the officer held his flashlight steady as a lone figure emerged from the shadows. Sixty-year-old Martha stepped out into the hallway, her gray hair still neatly tied in a bun despite the ordeal, her brown cardigan pulled tightly around her shoulders. She blinked against the bright morning light, taking a deep, ragged breath of fresh air. Then, turning her blazing eyes directly toward Clara, Martha pointed a trembling, accusing finger at her daughter, her voice cracking with righteous fury as she screamed, "She attacked and imprisoned me!" The emotional weight of the accusation hung heavily in the air, leaving no room for excuses or denials.
