Chapter 14

The sterile white halls of the hospital maternity ward seemed a world away from the oppressive, mahogany-paneled dining room where Clara’s journey of liberation had begun. Hours had passed in a blur of focused breathing, medical encouragement, and unwavering support from her mother, who never left her side. Marcus Vance waited patiently in the family lounge downstairs, keeping vigil over the arrival of the new heir to the Vance name.
With one final, empowering push, the heavy silence of the delivery room was shattered by the loud, lusty, beautiful cry of a newborn child.
The obstetrician beamed, lifting the tiny, squirming infant and wrapping it in a soft flannel blanket before gently placing the baby directly onto Clara’s chest. "Congratulations, Mrs. Vance-Sterling. You have a beautiful, healthy baby boy."
Clara wept openly, not with the sorrow or distress of the past, but with an overwhelming, transcendent joy. She stroked the soft, dark hair of her son, looking down into his tiny, peaceful face. He was perfect. He was safe. He would grow up knowing truth, strength, and unconditional love, entirely free from the shadows of deceit and manipulation that had nearly crushed his mother.
Her mother leaned over, kissing Clara’s forehead, tears streaming down her own cheeks as she gazed at her new grandson. "He’s magnificent, Clara. Absolutely magnificent."
"He’s free," Clara whispered softly, pressing her lips to the baby’s forehead.
Later that evening, when the room was quiet and the baby was sleeping soundly in his clear plastic bassinet beside the bed, Clara sat up and looked out the window at the city lights twinkling in the distance. She picked up her phone, her thumb hovering over an old, familiar number. She didn't call David—he was a chapter of her life that had already been closed and sealed. Instead, she dialed Marcus Vance.

"He's here, Marcus," Clara said softly when the lawyer answered on the first ring.
"Congratulations, Mrs. Vance-Sterling," Marcus replied, his voice filled with genuine warmth. "The future of the estate is secure. And more importantly, so is yours."
