Chapter 10

The grand courtroom of the municipal district court was packed to capacity. News of the Sterling estate scandal had leaked to the press, and flashbulbs popped erratically outside the heavy oak doors as high-profile journalists and curious onlookers strained to catch a glimpse of the proceedings. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Eleanor Sterling sat at the defense table, flanked by two expensive attorneys who looked entirely out of their depth. Her posture remained rigid, her chin held high in a desperate defiance of her encroaching ruin. A few seats down, David sat with his head bowed, staring fixedly at his hands, unable to look toward the plaintiff's side of the room.

At the plaintiff's table sat Clara, radiant and composed in a tailored emerald dress that contrasted sharply with the bleak courtroom decorum. Beside her sat her mother and Marcus Vance. There was no trace of the disheveled, gravy-stained woman from Friday night; instead, Clara radiated a quiet, unshakeable power that commanded the attention of everyone in the room.

Judge Henderson, a stern-faced magistrate with decades on the bench, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the towering stack of documents before him.

"This court has reviewed the forensic audits, the unsealed codicil of Thomas Vance, and the sworn testimony of corporate officers," Judge Henderson began, his voice echoing authoritatively off the high vaulted ceilings. "The evidence of systematic fraud, asset misappropriation, and deliberate suppression of legal inheritance is overwhelming and undisputed."

One of Eleanor’s attorneys stood up hastily, gesturing wildly. "Your Honor, we request a recess to review mitigating circumstances regarding—"

"Sit down, counselor," Judge Henderson interrupted, his tone razor-sharp. "There are no mitigating circumstances for systemic theft and calculated psychological abuse. This court hereby recognizes the unsealed codicil as the legally binding testament of Thomas Vance, transferring full administrative control of the Sterling estate, corporate holdings, and residential properties directly to the primary lawful heir, Clara Vance-Sterling."

A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Eleanor went completely rigid, her hands gripping the edge of the defense table so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"Furthermore," Judge Henderson continued, tapping his gavel lightly against the wood, "all emergency freezing orders are made permanent pending criminal investigations into the fraudulent diversion of trust funds by Eleanor Sterling and associated parties."

Clara closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, slow breath. The nightmare was ending. The cage was shattered. She placed a gentle hand over her belly, feeling her baby give a reassuring kick, as if acknowledging the victory.
