Chapter 6 - Trapped in the Pines

The blinding glare of high-beam headlights washed over the dilapidated cabin and slammed against the rear window of the sedan. Clara threw her hands up to shield her eyes, a sharp gasp escaping her lips as the shadows of two heavy-duty SUVs blocked the narrow logging road behind them, effectively cutting off their only escape route.

"Jax!" Clara yelled over the roar of idling diesel engines.

Jax was already moving, his boots hitting the packed dirt as he sprinted toward the rear door of the sedan. He yanked it open with one hand, his other gripping the tactical shotgun across his chest. "Out! Now! Move, move, move!"

Clara didn't hesitate. She unbuckled herself, scrambled into the back seat, and hauled Emma out into the freezing night air, clutching the little girl tight against her chest as the cold pine needles crunched beneath her sneakers. The smell of burning diesel and pine sap filled the clearing.

"Through the cabin door, down the cellar hatch in the kitchen," Jax commanded, his voice dropping an octave into pure tactical command. He fired a single warning shot toward the advancing SUVs. The deafening blast of the 12-gauge echoed through the mountain valley, shattering the glass of the lead vehicle's windshield and forcing the silhouettes behind the high beams to scatter into the brush.

Clara grabbed the warped wooden handle of the cabin door, throwing her weight against it until the rusted latch gave way with a loud pop. Inside, the air smelled of dust, old wool, and damp earth. She hauled Emma inside, the child whimpering in terror as the distant sound of shouting voices drifted from the clearing.

"Mommy, I'm scared," Emma cried, burying her face in Clara's shoulder.

"I know, baby, I know. Just hold onto me," Clara panted, her eyes scanning the dark, cramped interior of the cabin. A faint sliver of moonlight cut through a grimy side window, illuminating a set of heavy wooden floorboards in the corner that served as a cellar hatch.

The heavy front door shook violently as Jax slammed it shut behind them, throwing a thick iron deadbolt into place just as the first heavy thud hit the exterior wall. Wood splintered near the doorframe, and a muffled shout rang out from the porch.

"They're on the front deck!" Jax yelled, his breathing heavy as he positioned himself beside the window, tracking movement outside with absolute, unblinking focus.

"Jax, there's no back way out of this cabin!" Clara shouted back over the rising chaos, lifting the heavy wooden cellar hatch to reveal a set of crumbling concrete stairs descending into absolute blackness. "It's a dead end!"

Jax didn't look back from the window. "It's not a dead end, Clara. It's a drainage culvert that empties into the creek fifty yards down the ridge. Move!"

A barrage of suppressed gunfire ripped through the wooden siding of the cabin. Splinters exploded into the air like wooden shrapnel, raining down around Clara and Emma. One round punched a ragged hole through the wall inches from Clara's head, the hot rush of air grazing her cheek.

Clara shoved Emma down the dark cellar stairs, ignoring the screams of terror from her daughter as she followed blindly into the subterranean dampness. Behind them, the front door of the cabin was kicked inward with a tremendous crash, splintering the frame and signaling that their sanctuary had been thoroughly breached.

Jax fired twice into the darkened doorway, the muzzle flash illuminating his grim, determined face for a split second before he backed down the cellar steps, pulling the heavy wooden hatch shut and dropping the iron security bar into place just as heavy boots pounded across the floorboards above their heads.
