Chapter 4 - The Sound of Lead

The deafening crack of a suppressed rifle round shattered the peaceful golden hour twilight, sending a flock of pigeons exploding upward from the oak trees. Clara screamed, the raw terror tearing from her throat as she dropped instantly to her knees, dragging Emma down into the mulch beneath the slide. The world narrowed to the frantic pounding of her own heartbeat and the smell of cedar chips and cordite hanging faintly in the air.
Jax didn't panic. Years of muscle memory, burned into his nervous system during a tour in hell, took over instantly. With terrifying speed, he grabbed Clara by the collar of her shirt and hauled her and Emma behind the thick concrete base of the playground's climbing structure just as a second bullet splintered the wooden support post inches above their heads.
"Stay low! Do not lift your heads!" Jax barked, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling timbre that commanded absolute obedience.
Clara cluthed Emma so tightly against her chest that the little girl let out a small squeak of protest. Tears streamed hot and fast down Clara's cheeks, washing away the disbelief and replacing it with a paralyzing, primal terror. This wasn't a misunderstanding. This wasn't a cruel prank or a case of mistaken identity. Someone was actively trying to kill them in the middle of a public park, and the only shield between her family and execution was a scarred, middle-aged biker she had met ten minutes ago.
"Who is that?" Clara sobbed, her voice trembling uncontrollably as she pressed her face into Emma's blonde hair. "What do they want from us?"
Jax crouched behind the concrete barrier, his eyes scanning the treeline where the black pickup truck idled by the park entrance. The vehicle was already shifting into reverse, its tires kicking up gravel as it backed rapidly out of sight down the narrow residential street, fleeing before local police could respond to the gunfire. The threat had withdrawn, but the message had been delivered with brutal clarity.
"They want the drive," Jax said grimly, his hand resting instinctively on a heavy hunting knife sheathed at his belt. He didn't carry a firearm openly—not here, not now—but the hardened set of his jaw told Clara he was entirely prepared for violence. "Your husband had something the agency thought they burned in Kandahar. When they realized he survived the purge, they hunted him down. Now they're hunting you."
Clara shook her head, the horror suffocating her. "I don't know anything about a drive! Daniel never mentioned any digital files, any secrets, nothing!"
Jax turned his head, his deep-set eyes meeting hers with intense, unflinching scrutiny. He reached into his vest pocket once more, pulling out a small, metallic object and dropping it into Clara's trembling palm. It was a standard tactical USB drive, matte black and etched with a series of tiny serial numbers.
"He didn't tell you because he was protecting you," Jax said softly. "And now you have to make a choice, Clara. You can run home, wait for them to kick your front door down, and become another closed-file statistic... or you can trust the only man left alive who can keep your daughter breathing."
Clara looked down at the tiny drive resting in her hand like a live grenade. The silence of the park rushed back in, heavy and suffocating.
"And if we trust you?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking.
Jax stood up slowly, scanning the empty street beyond the playground gate, and offered her a weathered, calloused hand.
