Chapter 10

Three weeks later, the boardroom on the top floor of the Vance Foundation tower was filled with an oppressive, heavy quiet. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the bustling downtown district below, bathed in the gray light of a late autumn rain. Around the long mahogany table sat the remaining board members—men and women in sharp business attire who had spent years looking the other way while Arthur consolidated his power.

Clara stood at the head of the table. She wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit, her dark hair pinned back with severe elegance. The bruises on her wrists were completely faded, hidden beneath the cuffs of her silk blouse, but the strength in her posture was unmistakable.

Julian sat near the back of the room, acting as corporate secretary, his fingers resting on the keys of a slim laptop.

"The restructuring audit is complete," Clara announced, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly across the large room. She didn't look at the uneasy faces staring back at her. "Effective immediately, all asset transfers executed under Arthur Vance’s provisional authority are voided. The South American land acquisitions have been canceled, and the original endowment funds will be redirected toward public health initiatives in the county."

A murmur rippled through the table. One of the senior vice presidents, a man named Henderson whose ties to Arthur ran deep, cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Miss Vance, canceling the acquisitions will trigger immediate penalties from our overseas partners. The board wasn't consulted on this specific timeline."

"The board hasn't functioned as an independent body in five years, Henderson," Clara replied smoothly, her dark eyes locking onto his with absolute authority. "You were aware of the provisional status audits, yet you chose silence in exchange for quarterly bonuses. Consider this your final warning, or you can join Arthur in his current accommodations."

Henderson swallowed hard and looked down at his leather portfolio, saying nothing more.

Julian watched her from the back of the room, a deep sense of pride swelling in his chest. The fragile, terrified woman trapped inside the white casket had vanished, replaced by a leader forged in the crucible of betrayal. She wasn't just surviving anymore; she was reclaiming every inch of her empire.
