Chapter 1

The heavy brass candlestick remained warm in Julian’s palm, slick with his own sweat. Beneath his feet, the pristine white marble of St. Jude’s chapel seemed to tilt, the vaulted ceilings spinning in a slow, suffocating blur. Dust motes danced in the pale morning shafts of light cutting through stained glass, settling gently over the fractured white wood of the casket lid. The jagged hole gaped open like an unhealed wound, exposing the dim, velvet-lined interior where Clara lay trapped.
Julian’s breath came in ragged, burning gasps. His knuckles were bruised, the black wool of his heavy winter coat torn at the shoulder where he had violently shoved past the heavy oak pew frames moments ago. He could still hear the hollow echo of his own voice screaming that she was breathing, that the cold pulse of fear beneath her wedding veil had not been a ghost’s touch, but life itself.
Across the aisle, Arthur’s grey suit was immaculate, save for the furious tremor in his right hand. Arthur’s face had drained of all color, the skin tightening over his prominent jawline until it resembled aged parchment. The older man’s chest heaved with suppressed rage, his dark eyes fixed not on Julian, but on the ruined lid of the white casket.
"You absolute fool," Arthur hissed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that cut through the silent nave. "You’ve destroyed her final dignity. She is gone, Julian. Let the earth take what remains."

"She isn't gone," Julian choked out, his throat raw. He took a staggering step forward, raising the heavy candlestick again as a defensive ward, though there was no one left to fight except the suffocating architecture of their collective lies. "I heard her. Through the grain of the wood. A double heartbeat, Arthur. Don't pretend you didn't know."
Before Arthur could lunge forward, a sharp intake of breath shattered the tension. Evelyn stepped backward out of the shadows cast by the towering baptismal font. Her dark green velvet dress whispered against the stone floor, the heavy black mourning veil shifting to reveal a face completely stripped of composure. Her fingers were clawed into the rich fabric at her chest, pressing hard as if trying to force her own racing heart to slow down. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the fractured horror of the broken box.
