Chapter 5

The private elevator doors slid open with a smooth, expensive hiss. The warm light of the penthouse spilled out into the dimly lit foyer, illuminating a single figure standing motionless on the custom Persian rug. Clara had discarded the beige trench coat, revealing the full extent of the blood-stained hospital gown beneath. Her dark hair was still tied back loosely, strands framing her bruised, angular face. In her right hand, she carried a heavy, leather-bound ledger—the original corporate ledger containing the signatures that authorized the asset transfer on the day of her supposed death.

Marcus raised the Beretta, his arms trembling as he aimed the barrel directly at Clara’s chest. “Stop right there! Don’t take another step or I swear to God—”

“You’ve already sworn an oath to God, Marcus, and look how that turned out,” Clara interrupted, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear. She didn’t even look at the gun. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Julian, who stood frozen amidst the broken crystal and spilled scotch.

“Clara,” Julian choked out, taking a tentative step forward. “How did you—the security codes—”

“You always used your mother’s birthday for the private lift, Julian. Some habits die hard, even when you try to bury the person who memorized them,” Clara replied coldly. She lifted the leather ledger slightly, letting the faint sound of turning pages punctuate the silence. “You two were so busy planning a lavish wedding and dividing up my portfolio that you forgot the cardinal rule of financial crime: never leave the paper trail in a vault where an heir can find it.”

Elena’s panic finally overrode her caution. She lunged forward past Marcus, her voice cracking with fury. “You absolute bitch! You think you can waltz in here and ruin everything we built? Marcus, shoot her! She’s legally a non-person, no one will ever find the body this time!”

Clara’s gaze snapped to Elena. There was no flinching, no retreat. Instead, a cold, calculating expression settled over Clara’s features.

“This time?” Clara repeated softly, letting the words hang in the air like a blade. “Thank you for the confession, Elena. My phone has been recording audio since I stepped out of the elevator. The precinct downtown is going to love hearing a three-time murderer plan a sequel.”

Marcus lowered the gun fractionally, horror dawning in his eyes as he looked at Elena. The fragile alliance between the three conspirators fractured instantly. Julian saw the trap closing around them, realizing that Elena’s bloodlust had just signed their definitive arrest warrants.
