Chapter 11
The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Vance Enterprises was dead silent when Clara pushed the frosted glass doors open. Twenty board members, all impeccably dressed in dark suits, turned simultaneously to look at the entrance. Julian’s empty chair at the head of the mahogany table had been removed entirely, replaced by a clear, unobstructed view of the skyline.
Arthur Vance gestured toward the central seat. “Please, Clara.”
Clara walked forward with measured grace, her heels clicking rhythmically against the parquet floor. She wore no jewelry except for a simple silver band on her right hand, her posture upright and commanding. She did not sit immediately; instead, she leaned both hands on the edge of the table, letting her gaze sweep slowly across the faces of the men and women who had watched her ouster three months ago without raising a single objection.
“Good morning,” Clara said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the large room. “I trust you’ve all had an opportunity to review the forensic audit and the legal filings regarding my temporary absence.”
A murmur rippled through the room. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs. One older executive, a longtime ally of Julian’s named Harrison, cleared his throat. “Clara, while we are profoundly relieved to see you... alive, the legal complexities of your estate, the probate settlement, and the corporate restructuring initiated by Julian and Elena present a massive regulatory hurdle.”
“There is no hurdle, Harrison,” Clara replied, her tone sharpening instantly. She tapped the leather ledger resting before her. “There is only fraud. Every document authorizing the asset transfer was executed using forged signatures while I was legally incapacitated under heavy sedatives administered by my former husband. The district attorney has already frozen every account tied to the merger.”
Harrison opened his mouth to object, but Vance cut him off with a sharp wave of his hand.

“The board’s exposure is considerable if we attempt to contest her reinstatement,” Vance stated flatly. “The motion to nullify the fraudulent merger and restore Clara to her position as majority CEO is currently before you. All in favor signify by raising your hand.”
One by one, hands went up around the table. Harrison hesitated for a second, looked around the room, and slowly raised his hand as well. The vote was unanimous.
