Chapter 9

The ballroom was a masterpiece of sensory overload. The scent of blooming orchids and roasting truffles hung heavy in the air as hundreds of guests mingled beneath the towering ceilings. When Maya entered the room on David’s arm, the ambient noise dipped perceptibly before swelling back into a polite wave of applause. The board of directors sat near the dais, their expressions a study in forced cordiality and suppressed anxiety. They knew that tonight’s gala wasn't just a celebration of financial success; it was a referendum on Maya’s absolute control over the company.
As Maya took her seat at the central head table, she scanned the room, noting the diverse array of international investors, tech founders, cultural icons, and financial titans she had personally invited to reshape the narrative of the Grand Astoria. For too long, luxury hospitality had catered exclusively to an old-guard demographic that viewed exclusivity as a shield against the changing world. Maya was proving that true luxury was expansive, confident, and entirely unthreatened by inclusion.
Midway through the multi-course dinner, as servers poured vintage Bordeaux into crystal goblets, Thomas Vance leaned across the table toward Maya, lowering his voice.
"The press pool is asking about the management shakeup downstairs," Thomas whispered. "Specifically, rumors about an internal security incident involving racial profiling. If that story hits the financial blogs tomorrow morning, it could complicate our institutional partnerships for the London expansion."

Maya turned her head slowly, fixing Thomas with a steady, unblinking gaze. "Let me be entirely clear with you, Thomas. If the press asks about the incident, we will confirm it with absolute transparency. We do not sweep bigotry under the rug at the Grand Astoria. If our partners are uncomfortable with a hotel that enforces basic human dignity and zero-tolerance policies against profiling, then they are welcome to pull their capital. I will find investors who understand the future."
Thomas pressed his lips into a thin line and leaned back in his chair, realizing that any attempt to sway Maya’s moral and operational compass was an exercise in futility.
