Chapter 14

By Monday afternoon, the Grand Astoria was running with the precision of a Swiss watch. In the lobby, guests walked freely toward the private elevators, greeted by staff who understood that true luxury was rooted in universal respect. Maya walked down the grand central staircase, wearing a sharp, tailored cream-colored pantsuit that echoed the one she had worn days earlier, yet carried an entirely different energy.

As she crossed the polished marble floor toward the entrance, a new bellman—a young man with a bright, welcoming smile—stepped forward, holding open the heavy brass doors.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Vance," he said respectfully, his posture open and confident.

Maya paused for a fraction of a second, offering a warm, genuine smile in return. "Good afternoon, James. Keep up the excellent work."

She stepped out onto Fifth Avenue, the crisp Manhattan air filling her lungs as the afternoon sun caught the gold hoop earrings she wore. She reached into her beige handbag, feeling the cool metallic edge of the gold membership card nestled safely inside her wallet. She didn't need to pull it out today. Everyone from the lobby to the boardrooms knew exactly who she was, what she had built, and the unwavering standard of dignity she demanded.
