Chapter 7

Inside the brightly lit kitchen, the atmosphere remained subdued and anxious as the family gathered around the wooden island. Clara sat perched on a barstool, the glittering birthday cone hat finally removed from her braided blonde hair, clutching a glass of cold milk between her small hands with a quiet, solemn expression. Leo was leaning against his mother, seeking comfort after the terrifying sight of the toxic rat and the ruined celebration. The mother spoke in hushed, reassuring tones, explaining that the afternoon had taken an unexpected turn and that their brave dog Barnaby had truly saved them from a terrible illness. Clara looked toward the patio doors where her father and the golden retriever stood outside, her initial sadness over her ruined cake completely eclipsed by a profound, tearful gratitude for her loyal pet.

Outside on the lawn, the father dialed the local police department on his mobile phone, keeping his voice low and steady as he reported the discovery of the poisoned pastry and the suspicious bakery box found near the side gate. The dispatcher listened with professional calm, promising to send an officer out to investigate the tampered dessert as soon as possible. As the father ended the call, he looked across the fence toward the adjacent properties that lined their quiet suburban street. The neighboring houses looked peaceful and undisturbed, their manicured lawns and blooming flower beds radiating an illusion of absolute safety that now felt terribly fragile and deceptive.

Barnaby let out a low, inquisitive bark, trotting a few steps toward the far corner of the yard where the wooden fence met the edge of the detached garage. The golden retriever pressed his nose against the bottom slat of the fencing, his tail giving a single, tentative wag before freezing in place as he caught a familiar scent drifting over from the neighboring yard. The father walked over to join his furry protector, peering through the narrow gap between the wooden planks. In the neighboring yard, an elderly garden gnome lay shattered on the concrete patio, surrounded by freshly disturbed dirt and muddy footprints that did not belong to any member of the quiet elderly couple who lived next door.
