Chapter 10

The father carefully used a pair of gardening shears to clip the blackberry thorn holding the scrap of dark blue fabric, dropping the physical evidence directly into a clean glass jar he had brought from the kitchen. Returning to the brightly lit patio table, he examined the cloth under the beam of his flashlight, noting the distinct double-stitched pocket seam and the faint smudge of petroleum grease near the torn edge. This was not the clothing of a random vagrant or a neighborhood prankster; it belonged to someone who worked with heavy machinery or automotive repair, narrowing down the potential pool of suspects significantly within their quiet residential district.

Barnaby paced restlessly beside the patio table, his nails clicking softly against the concrete, clearly sensing the growing tension in his human master. The golden retriever let out a soft whine, nudging the father’s knee with his wet nose to redirect his attention toward the side gate, where the shadows met the driveway. The father patted the dog's golden head in affectionate gratitude, whispering words of praise for his unwavering vigilance throughout the harrowing day. The bond between the man and the dog had deepened into something unbreakable, forged in the crucible of sudden danger and mutual survival.

The front door opened softly, and the mother stepped out onto the patio, carrying a warm mug of tea for her husband and a gentle update regarding the children. Clara and Leo had finally fallen fast asleep upstairs in their respective beds, completely exhausted by the emotional rollercoaster of a birthday party turned upside down. The mother wrapped a knitted shawl tightly around her shoulders against the cooling night air, gazing down at the glass jar containing the scrap of mechanic's cloth with a mixture of apprehension and resolve. She knew that whoever had tried to harm their family was still out there in the dark, but she also knew they were no longer dealing with blind ignorance—they were prepared, united, and guarded by the most loyal canine protector imaginable.
