Chapter 12

Julian’s cab dropped him off two blocks away from the small fourth-floor apartment on 4th Street. He walked the remaining distance on foot, enjoying the crisp afternoon air and the unfamiliar sensation of having nowhere specific to be and no schedule to manage. When he unlocked the heavy oak door of apartment 4B, the space felt different. Sunlight still poured through the unwashed north window, but the air no longer smelled of dust and abandonment. He had spent the morning having basic supplies delivered—a sturdy wooden work table, a set of oil paints, sketchbooks, and a few simple chairs. He walked over to the old wooden easel standing near the window, running his hand along its weathered frame. He had never painted a day in his life, but standing here in this raw, uncurated space, he felt an irrepressible urge to create something that wasn't designed to generate profit or impress an audience. He picked up a charcoal stick from the table, walked over to a blank white canvas he had propped against the wall, and stared at the empty surface for a long time. The white expanse was intimidating, reminding him of the terrifying blank slate of his own future. He closed his eyes, took a deep, measured breath, and let the charcoal touch the canvas, making a series of bold, uncalculated strokes. There was no strategy meeting, no risk assessment, and no expected ROI. There was only the friction of carbon against cloth, the steady rhythm of his breathing, and the quiet realization that he was finally allowed to make mistakes. He painted for hours, losing track of time as the natural light shifted from amber gold to twilight purple, completely absorbed in the messy, imperfect process of expression. When his phone buzzed in his pocket—a final notification from Marcus confirming that the unconditional asset transfer papers had been signed and delivered to Elena’s legal representation—Julian simply silenced the device, slipped it back into his pocket, and went back to his brushwork without missing a beat.
