Chapter 13

The blast wave from the utility alcove sent a wall of searing heat and flying debris across the study, knocking the tactical officers off their feet and sending Clara's wheelchair spinning backward into the hallway just as the ceiling began to collapse in a shower of sparks and plaster. The captain shielded Clara with his own body, taking the brunt of a falling wooden beam across his shoulder while coughing violently from the dense, choking smoke. Through the billowing flames, Leo emerged from the floor cavity, coughing and covered in soot, dragging himself out into the hallway just as the second-floor floorboards gave way completely.

"Clara! Grab my hand!" Leo shouted over the roar of the fire, ignoring his own bleeding arms as he crawled across the scorched floorboards toward her.

Clara reached out, her small fingers locking tightly around Leo's wrist with a desperate strength born of survival, pulling him clear of the collapsing doorway just as the entire study vanished into a roaring inferno of red and gold flames.

Outside on the front lawn, the cool night air hit Clara's face like a blessing, washing away the heat of the fire as paramedics swarmed around them with oxygen masks and thermal blankets. Sirens wailed from half a dozen emergency vehicles parked along the curb, their flashing red and blue lights painting the manicured green lawn and the fluttering American flag in stark, electric colors. Dr. Harrison was dragged out through the smoke-filled back exit by two police officers, his clothes torn and his face blackened with soot, shouting furious denials that were quickly cut off as they pushed him into the back of a black patrol car.

The captain knelt beside Clara's wheelchair, handing her a fresh bottle of water while a paramedic gently checked the bandages on her head.

"You saved your brother's life tonight, young lady," the captain said, his voice filled with deep, hard-earned respect.

"And the data packets your brother queued to the cloud server... they just finished downloading at police headquarters. Every single file on the corporate corruption ring is secured."

Clara took a slow sip of the cool water, her eyes wandering over to the spot on the lawn where her birthday cake had been ruined hours earlier. The pink frosting was gone, washed away by the mist, but the small cardboard box still lay in the grass.

Leo leaned over the arm of her wheelchair, resting his head gently against her shoulder with a quiet, exhausted sigh.

"We did it, Clara," he whispered softly, his voice trembling with unshed tears.

"Dad's name is finally cleared."

Clara looked directly up at the starry night sky, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in months, though a sudden, chilling draft from the open alleyway gate made the hairs on her arms stand up.
