Chapter 10

The cold mechanical voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls of the utility alcove, repeating the chilling phrase over and over like a broken record: SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED. Clara froze, her fingers resting lightly on the black toggle switch while the entire house seemed to shudder around her as heavy internal fire doors dropped into place across the hallways, sealing every exit with a series of loud, pneumatic thuds. From the main room, Dr. Harrison stopped thrashing in the floorboards, his breathing turning shallow and frantic as the gravity of the situation finally sank in.

"That's impossible," Dr. Harrison whispered, his voice trembling with genuine terror for the first time.

"The facility protocols... they shouldn't trigger unless the main server room is physically breached from the outside!"

Clara pulled her hand back from the panel as a small digital display beneath the switch began ticking down from ten minutes, casting a harsh, crimson glow over her face and the thick bandages on her head.

"Leo was right," she said aloud, her voice ringing out clearly in the confined space.

"You didn't just build a private clinic, did you? You built an illegal data-storage hub for the corporate syndicate, and the system is programmed to burn everything to ash if anyone tries to expose you."

Before Dr. Harrison could reply, a faint, high-pitched sound pierced the heavy silence from outside the sealed estate—the unmistakable wail of police sirens echoing down the suburban street, growing louder with every second. The flashing red and blue lights began to paint patterns of light across the exterior iron shutters, slicing through the darkness of the study in rhythmic pulses. Clara dragged herself out of the utility alcove, pulling her bruised body back toward the center of the room where the intercom speaker was still dangling from the desk wires.

"Leo! Can you hear the sirens?" Clara shouted into the microphone, her heart soaring with sudden, desperate hope.

"The police are outside! They're at the front gate!"

Static crackled on the other end, and then Leo's voice came through, sounding weaker than before.

"Clara... listen to me... the front gate is rigged with a high-voltage security grid... if the police try to force it open while the system is armed..."

A tremendous explosion rocked the front of the estate, shaking the windows and cutting off Leo's sentence mid-word as a thick plume of black smoke began to pour into the study through the ventilation ducts.
