Chapter 4: Footsteps in the Hallway

Before either of them could speak, a distinct, heavy footstep echoed from the concrete corridor outside the heavy oak door of the science annex. It wasn't the light, shuffling stride of a tired student or the steady pace of the regular night janitor. It was the sharp, deliberate click of hard-soled leather shoes—the kind worn exclusively by university administrators or department heads. Clara froze instantly, her hand dropping the solvent bottle onto the metal table with a dull clatter. Julian scrambled off the exam table, his heart hammering against his ribs as he instinctively backed away toward the chemical fume hood in the corner of the room.

"Get down," Clara hissed, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation system. She lunged forward, kicking the remaining pieces of white polymer under the stainless steel table and sweeping the red brass key into the deep pocket of her dark blue t-shirt. The footsteps stopped directly outside the wooden door. For three agonizing seconds, absolute silence hung in the room. Then came the metallic rattle of the doorknob turning. The heavy door was locked from the inside, but the latch clicked loudly as someone tested the handle with firm, authoritative pressure.

Julian held his breath, pressing his back against the cold glass of the fume hood. He looked at Clara, who stood bravely near the center of the room, her chin raised despite the pale terror visible in her eyes. She picked up a chemistry textbook from the nearest lab bench, flipping it open at random as if she had been studying quietly for hours. The doorknob rattled a second time, more aggressively now. A muffled voice echoed through the thick oak paneling, deep and unmistakably irritated. "Vance? Is someone in there? The building is closed for inventory."

Recognizing the voice, Clara’s shoulders stiffened visibly. It was Dean Harrison, the stern, ambitious head of the science faculty who had been pushing Dr. Vance for months to deliver his commercial polymer patents ahead of schedule. If Harrison found Julian hiding in a restricted laboratory after hours—especially with chemical evidence of unauthorized entry scattered around the room—both Julian’s academic career and Dr. Vance’s tenure would be instantly terminated. Clara raised her voice, injecting a tone of casual annoyance into her delivery to mask the underlying panic. "I’m still working on my titration assignment, Dean Harrison! The lab lights are on a timer, I'll be out in ten minutes!"

Outside the door, the footsteps paused. A heavy sigh echoed through the wood, followed by the faint rustle of clipboards or paperwork. "Make it five, Ms. Vance," Harrison replied, his voice dripping with cold bureaucracy. "And ensure your father locks his office properly tonight. Campus security reported a compromised seal on the fifth-floor archives earlier this evening. We cannot afford careless security breaches right now." The heavy leather shoes turned on the concrete floor, clicking away down the long corridor until the sound faded completely into the ambient hum of the building.
