Chapter 10: The Broadcast

With a sharp, decisive motion, Julian slammed his thumb down onto the broadcast toggle of the dictaphone, while Clara lunged forward, grabbing the heavy brass paperweight from the desk and hurling it directly at the digital keypad on the wall safe. The dictaphone immediately screeched to life, piping Dr. Vance’s recorded voice through the hidden ceiling speakers across the entire fifth-floor administrative wing at maximum volume. "—Harrison has the original lab logs in his wall safe... Miller is running the cover-up... Project Helios is compromised..." The sharp, mechanical feedback echoed down the hallway outside, shattering the quiet sanctity of the administrative offices.
Simultaneously, Clara’s brass paperweight struck the digital keypad with a loud crack, shattering the display screen and interrupting the data-wipe sequence mid-cycle just as the amber light flickered. Professor Miller lunged toward the desk with a snarl of pure fury, abandoning his polished facade entirely as he reached out to grab Julian by the collar of his grey sweatshirt. Julian twisted away, stumbling backward against the open wall safe and knocking several leather-bound logbooks onto the carpeted floor in a disorganized heap.
"You absolute fools!" Miller shouted over the blaring audio loop of Dr. Vance’s voice echoing through the corridor ventilation grates. He swung his heavy metal override fob like a weapon, aiming for Julian’s shoulder, but Clara intercepted him, throwing her full weight against Miller’s arm and driving him back against the mahogany bookshelf. Heavy textbooks cascaded down from the upper shelves, burying Miller in a chaotic avalanche of paper, leather bindings, and dust.

Outside in the hallway, the sound of multiple running footsteps and shouting voices broke through the chaos. Dean Harrison, alerted by the deafening audio broadcast echoing through the administrative wing, was storming down the corridor with campus security officers close behind him. The heavy oak door burst open wide, slamming against the interior wall with a violent thud. Harrison stood on the threshold, chest heaving, his face flushed with absolute shock as he looked upon the chaotic scene: Professor Miller struggling to untangle himself from a pile of textbooks, Clara standing defiantly by the desk, and Julian holding the blinking dictaphone in his hand.
"What in God's name is happening in here?" Harrison bellowed, his voice trembling with a mix of fury and profound panic as he surveyed the ruined wall safe and the open logbooks scattered across the floor. The institutional cover-up was no longer a quiet administrative secret; it was exposed in broad daylight for every security officer and arriving faculty member to witness firsthand.
