Chapter 7: A Quiet Alliance

Inside the bustling school library the following afternoon, the usual sea of students hunched over textbooks provided a welcome contrast to the chaotic energy of the courtyard. Maya sat at a secluded wooden carrel near the back, surrounded by stacks of reference materials on school governance and student rights. She was methodically taking notes in a black-bound journal when a shadow fell across her desk. She looked up to see Leo standing there, holding a manila folder under his arm.
"Mind if I sit?" Leo asked quietly, gesturing to the empty chair opposite her.
Maya gestured with her pen for him to take a seat. "Go ahead, Leo. Are you here to take another candid shot for your photo gallery of campus unrest?"
Leo smiled faintly, pulling out the chair and sitting down. He placed the manila folder on the desk and slid it toward her. "Actually, no. After seeing what happened yesterday, I started digging through the school newspaper's digital archives from the past three years. I found a pattern, Maya. You aren't the first person Marcus has targeted, but you're the first one who refused to stay quiet or transfer out."
Maya opened the folder. Inside were printed copies of formal complaints filed by former students who had mysteriously transferred or dropped out of extracurricular activities after clashing with Marcus and his athletic clique. The documentation revealed a systemic pattern of intimidation that the administration had quietly swept under the rug to protect the school’s athletic reputation.
"Why are you showing me this?" Maya asked, looking up into Leo’s earnest eyes.
"Because pictures and gossip fade, but documentation creates accountability," Leo said leaning forward. "Principal Henderson and the school board care about PR above everything else. If we present this data—not as a personal vendetta, but as a systemic issue affecting student safety—they won't be able to ignore it anymore."
Maya closed the folder, a thoughtful expression replacing her usual guarded demeanor. She realized Leo was offering something far more powerful than a temporary truce; he was offering a strategic partnership. "If we do this, Marcus and his friends won't just be angry—they'll try to discredit us completely. They’ll use every social connection they have."

"Let them try," Leo replied with quiet conviction. "Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Are you in?"
Maya looked down at the silver cross necklace resting against her chest, then back at Leo. She extended her hand across the wooden table. "Let's clean house."
