Chapter 13: The Board's Reckoning

For several long, excruciating seconds, the only sound in the vast auditorium was the faint hum of the overhead projector cooling fan. The five school board members stared up at the glowing timeline of suppressed complaints displayed on the screen behind them, their political calculations shifting in real time. Dr. Vance slowly adjusted his glasses, his professional veneer cracking under the weight of undeniable, publicly broadcasted evidence.
Marcus’s father slammed his hand onto the armrest of his seat, his face mottled with fury. "This is a coordinated hit job! Fabricated data designed to sabotage the varsity program before the regional championships!" he bellowed, looking around the auditorium for sympathetic nods that no longer came. Parents in the rows behind him were now whispering among themselves, staring at the displayed statistics with genuine alarm and anger.
Dr. Vance raised a hand, silencing the brewing protest with a stern look. He turned his gaze toward Principal Henderson, whose pale face confirmed the worst. "Principal Henderson," Dr. Vance said, his voice cold and formal. "Are you aware of these documents?"
Principal Henderson swallowed hard, gripping the edges of the mahogany table. "Some of these reports... well, Dr. Vance, they were handled in accordance with historical school policy regarding minor disciplinary infractions," he stammered, digging his own grave with every syllable.
Maya stepped back slightly from the microphone, her voice ringing out with crystal clarity. "Historical policy should never mean institutional protection for bullies at the expense of student safety. When the administration prioritizes a championship trophy over the basic wellbeing of its students, the system has failed its fundamental purpose."
A wave of quiet approval rippled through the rows of students and parents seated near the back. The atmosphere in the auditorium had completely transformed; the intimidation tactics of the athletic booster club had evaporated in the harsh, unfiltered light of accountability.

Dr. Vance turned back to the board members, conferring in hushed tones for less than a minute before turning back to the microphone. "The Oakridge School Board takes these allegations with the utmost seriousness," Dr. Vance announced, his official tone leaving no room for debate. "Effective immediately, an independent external audit of the athletic department's disciplinary records will be initiated. Principal Henderson, you are placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. Furthermore, all pending disciplinary actions related to recent student altercations are suspended until the audit concludes."
Marcus slumped back in his chair, his expression completely blank, realizing that his family's wealth and influence could no longer shield him from the consequences of his actions. Maya stood quietly by the microphone, adjusted her glasses, and gave a small, respectful nod to the board before turning away to walk back up the aisle.
