Chapter 7: The Visitor in the Hallway

Arthur Davis did not leave the penthouse. Instead, he had been given a guest suite down the hall—a room furnished with Egyptian cotton sheets, marble bathtubs, and automated lighting that he refused to touch. He preferred the darkness, sitting in an armchair near the window, watching the distant hum of traffic far below.

A soft knock rattled the heavy oak door. Arthur didn't move, but the door slowly creaked open, revealing Elena. She held a tray with a steaming cup of black coffee and a plate of simple toast. She looked hesitant, stripped of her executive armor, appearing younger and more vulnerable than she had in the lobby.

"You haven't eaten," Elena said softly, stepping into the room with measured caution.

Arthur looked up at her, seeing the ghost of her mother in the curve of her jaw and the stubborn set of her chin. "I've spent thirty years eating dirt, young lady. Fancy hotel food tastes like ash anyway."

Elena placed the tray on the bedside table and pulled up a chair, sitting opposite the old soldier. The tension between them was thick, but it was no longer fueled by shock; it was the heavy, suffocating silence of shared grief.

"Tell me about him," Elena whispered.

"About your father?" Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Which one? The man who stole my name and built a gilded cage, or the scared kid who shared a canteen with me in the valley before he decided to save his own skin?"

"Both," Elena replied, her voice trembling slightly. "Tell me who he was before the war broke him."

Arthur stared out the window for a long moment, watching a hawk circle the distant skyscrapers. "Thomas wasn't a bad kid. He was just weak. In a place like that, weakness is a luxury you can't afford, because it forces you to choose between your life and your humanity. He chose his life. I don't hate him for it anymore. Hating someone for thirty years is too heavy a coat to wear in the winter of your life. But I want my name back, Elena. And I want the truth to see the light of day."

Elena nodded slowly, the tears finally spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheeks. "It will, Arthur. I promise you, it will."
