Chapter 4: Shadows in the Penthouse

The private elevator ride to the penthouse suite was a masterclass in suffocation. Four walls of tinted glass rose silently through the core of the Grand Meridian, offering a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, but inside the cabin, the atmosphere was absolute zero. Arthur Davis stood in the corner, his worn green jacket looking like an insult to the brushed chrome interior. Elena stood near the control panel, her arms crossed tightly over her white blazer as if she were trying to hold herself together by sheer force of will. Julian stared at his own reflection in the glass, hating the man staring back at him.

When the doors slid open, they stepped into a cavernous living room designed by award-winning architects. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the sprawling metropolis, glowing with the lights of millions of people who had no idea who they really were.

"Sit down," Elena commanded, her tone brooking no argument. She pointed toward a white leather sofa that cost more than Arthur had earned in a decade.

Arthur did not sit. He walked slowly toward the grand fireplace, ignoring the plush rug beneath his mud-caked boots. His eyes scanned the expensive art pieces, the minimalist sculptures, and finally, the heavy mahogany desk resting near the window. On that desk sat a silver-framed photograph identical to the one he had held in the lobby.

"Nice place you bought with my life, Thomas," Arthur said, the name dropping into the room like a live grenade.

Julian stiffened, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "Don't call me that. That person died in the valley."

"People don't just die because you decide to change your Social Security number," Elena snapped, turning on Julian with a ferocity that caught him off guard. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears, burning with a betrayal that went far beyond mere corporate deception. "You lied to me. My whole life is built on a stolen foundation. Who are you, Julian Vance? Or should I say... Thomas Davis?"

Julian closed his eyes for a brief second, feeling the walls he had spent a lifetime constructing finally cave in on top of him. The past had broken down the front door, and there was nowhere left to hide.
