Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Master Bedroom

Clara pulled away from Mark as if she had been burned by hot coals, stumbling back into David’s waiting arms. The momentary lapse in her defenses vanished, replaced by a wall of frantic, defensive guilt.

"Get out," Clara whispered, shaking her head violently. "Just... please, Mark, just leave for tonight. You can't just drop this bomb on us and expect us to adjust in five minutes. The kids... look at the kids."

Mark looked up the stairs. Lily and Toby were still there, watching them with wide, traumatized eyes. The damage was already done; the fragile peace they had built over the last year had been shattered into a million jagged pieces with a single knock on the door.

"I'm not leaving my home, Clara," Mark said, his voice uncompromising. He picked up his heavy canvas backpack from the floor and slung it back over his shoulder. "I'm going upstairs to wash up. I want to see our room."

"No!" Clara screamed, stepping forward. "You can't go up there! That's... things have changed, Mark. You don't understand."

Mark paused on the first step of the staircase, the old oak groaning beneath the heavy tread of his boots. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes fixing on Clara with an unsettling intensity.

"What didn't I understand, Clara?" Mark asked softly. "Did you throw away my clothes? Did you sell my watch?"

"We packed up your things six months ago," David said, stepping toward the stairs, his jaw set. "To help her move on. To make space for the living. Your side of the closet isn't yours anymore, Mark. It's mine."

Mark stared at David for a long, agonizing moment. The air in the hallway grew so thick it felt almost impossible to breathe. Without a word, Mark turned and continued walking up the stairs, his heavy boots echoing like drumbeats in the quiet house.

"Mark, stop!" Clara cried, running after him.

Lily and Toby scrambled backward as their father approached the landing, pressing themselves flat against the wallpaper of the hallway to let him pass. Mark stopped in front of his children, his face softening just a fraction. He reached out a scarred hand as if to touch Lily’s hair, but she flinched away, burying her face in her knees.

Mark’s hand dropped to his side. He didn't speak to them. He simply walked past them, pushing open the white door at the end of the hall—the master bedroom.

The door creaked open, revealing a room that smelled faintly of lavender and a brand of men's cologne Mark had never bought in his life. On the dresser sat David’s watch, David’s keys, and a framed photograph of David and Clara laughing on that exact same bed.

Mark stood in the doorway for three seconds, taking it all in without a muscle in his face twitching. Then, he stepped inside and slowly closed the door behind him with a soft, final click.
