Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Shattered Silence

The front door clicked shut with a dull, heavy thud that sounded entirely too ordinary for the resurrection taking place in the hallway.

Mark stood motionless just inside the entryway, his heavy canvas backpack sliding an inch down his right shoulder. The tactical boots he wore were caked in the reddish-brown mud of a valley three thousand miles away—a valley his family had been told, in writing and with solemn military precision, he would never leave.

Clara stood by the coffee table, her hands instantly flying up to cover her mouth, muffling a gasp that felt ripped directly from her lungs. Her vibrant red slip dress caught the harsh afternoon light, stark against the pastel walls of a living room that had spent fourteen months drowning in perpetual, quiet grief.

On the floral sofa, David—Mark’s closest friend and the man who had helped Clara pick out the dark wood for the memorial bench in the backyard—jolt upright. His coffee mug slipped from his fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor with a sharp, violent crack that made the air freeze.

Up on the winding staircase, thirteen-year-old Lily and ten-year-old Toby stood frozen mid-embrace, tears tracking silently down their pale cheeks as their small frames shook with simultaneous terror and disbelief.

"You're dead," David breathed, his voice cracking into a high, ragged whisper as he shoved himself off the couch, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "We buried you, Mark. There was a casket. There was an honor guard."

"The casket was sealed, David," Mark said. His voice was flat, devoid of the warmth they all remembered, carrying instead the raspy metallic edge of a man who had forgotten how to speak to the living.

"Don't do this!" Clara shrieked, her hands dropping from her mouth as she stumbled backward, her heels catching on the edge of the braided rug. "You don't get to walk back in here after we mourned you! After we let him move in to help us breathe!"

"Clara, stop," Mark commanded, taking one slow, deliberate step forward into the room.

"No! You died in the pass!" Clara screamed, her voice pitching up with hysteria. "Who the hell is living in our house, and why are you wearing my husband's face?"
