Chapter 4: The Weight of Inheritance

Clara let her arms drop to her sides, the heavy folds of her wedding dress whispering against the floor as she took a hesitant step forward. The anger that had fueled her initial shock was rapidly being replaced by a numbing disbelief. She looked at Lily—really looked at her for the first time—and noticed the distinct shape of the brow, the specific curve of the chin that bore an undeniable resemblance to Julian’s late brother, Thomas. Thomas had always been the rebellious, unpredictable sibling, the one who disappeared for months on end into remote corners of the world, leaving behind whispered rumors and estranged family ties.

"A niece," Clara repeated, the word tasting foreign and impossible on her tongue. "You’re telling me you canceled our wedding, humiliated me in front of two hundred people, and ruined our entire future because you suddenly discovered you have a niece?"

"It’s not just about discovering I have a niece, Clara," Julian said, his voice rising slightly in frustration as he ran a hand through his hair, messing the styling he had spent an hour perfecting that morning. "Read the letter. Look at the legal mandates. Her mother didn't just die. The authorities believe she was poisoned. And the legal guardian designated in Thomas’s hidden will—the only person legally authorized to keep Lily safe until she turns eighteen—is me. If I didn't step in immediately, child protective services would have placed her in state custody within the hour, exposing her to the very people who murdered her mother."

Clara snatched the paper from Julian’s hand. Her eyes scanned the dense legal jargon, her breath catching as she read the clauses regarding assets, threats, and mandatory custody transfers. The document was legitimate, stamped with the seal of a respected probate court downtown. Yet, even as the truth settled into her mind, a deep resentment took root in her chest.

"And you couldn't tell me?" Clara’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes, hot and bitter. "We’ve been together for five years, Julian. We talked about everything. We planned every detail of our lives down to the color of the napkins on these tables. But the moment your past knocks on the door, you make a unilateral decision that destroys us, without giving me a single second to help you shoulder the burden?"

Julian looked down, unable to meet her gaze. "If I had told you, you would have tried to help. You would have insisted on going through with the wedding, pretending everything was fine while we protected her in secret. But the danger isn't theoretical, Clara. The people hunting this family are dangerous. They were at the venue today."

Lily gasped softly, pulling her knees up to her chest in the leather armchair. Clara froze, the parchment slipping from her trembling fingers to flutter uselessly onto the Persian rug. The garden outside, which had seemed merely disappointing a few moments ago, suddenly felt like a battlefield.
