Chapter 12: Cornered in the Dark

The sound reverberated off the damp stone walls, sharp and unmistakable—the unmistakable clack of a combat boot hitting loose gravel. Julian pulled his hand back from the rusted grate, freezing in place. Someone had entered the ventilation shaft behind them, cutting off their retreat and forcing them toward the exit before they were ready.
"They found the secondary entrance," Julian muttered, his voice tight with suppressed anger and desperation. He turned back toward the dark corridor, raising his hunting rifle, though visibility was practically zero without the flashlight.
"Julian, we can't fight them in this tunnel," Clara said urgently, gripping his arm. "If they have night vision, we’re silhouettes in a shooting gallery. We have to get through this grate right now."
Julian didn't hesitate. He jammed the barrel of his rifle into the rusted hinges of the iron grate, using it as a lever. With a sharp grunt of effort, he threw his weight against the metal. The rusted bolts shrieked in protest, the old iron bending outward under the immense pressure before the entire assembly popped loose with a resounding crash, tumbling out onto the dirt road outside.
"Go! Get out!" Julian yelled, shoving Lily through the jagged opening first. Clara scrambled through immediately after, scraping her hands against the sharp edges of the iron frame without feeling the pain. Julian slipped through last, pulling the heavy grate back over the opening and wedging a thick timber branch through the bars to buy them precious seconds if anyone tried to push through.
They sprinted across the overgrown logging track toward the battered pickup truck. Julian dove into the driver's side, his hands frantically searching beneath the sun visor and along the steering column. To his absolute relief, a worn brass key hung from a magnetic hide-a-key box attached beneath the dashboard. He ripped it free, jammed it into the ignition, and cranked the engine.

The old truck sputtered, coughed, and roared to life with a thick cloud of exhaust smoke that filled the clearing. Clara threw open the passenger door, hauling Lily into the cab beside her just as the iron grate at the mouth of the tunnel burst outward with a loud clang.
A figure emerged from the darkness of the shaft, raising a silenced pistol toward the truck. Julian slammed the gearshift into reverse, tires spinning wildly on the loose gravel before catching traction and launching the vehicle backward down the winding mountain track just as a bullet shattered the rear window, showering the truck bed with glass.
