Chapter 8: The Early Morning Raid

The sky was just beginning to streak with pale gray light when Detective Miller’s unmarked cruiser led a convoy of two patrol cars down the private, tree-lined avenue leading to the Vance family estate. The sprawling brick mansion stood silent against the morning mist, its grand front lawn entirely deserted now, the scattered paperwork from the previous afternoon having already been swept away by maintenance crews.
Clara and Marcus rode in the back of Miller’s cruiser, while Lily rested safely in the care of a trusted female officer back at the precinct. Clara stared out the window as the cars pulled up in a semi-circle around the grand double doors of the mansion.
“Stay in the vehicle until I give the word,” Detective Miller instructed, reaching for his service cap before pushing his door open.
The officers moved with practiced efficiency, fan-out to secure the perimeter while Miller and two deputies walked up the front steps and pounded heavily on the carved mahogany door. Several minutes passed in absolute silence. Just as Miller reached for his radio to call for a forced entry warrant, the heavy door clicked open.
David Vance stood in the doorway, wearing an expensive silk bathrobe, his hair slightly rumpled as if he had just rolled out of bed. His expression shifted from mild annoyance to profound shock as he looked past the officers and saw Clara sitting in the back of the police cruiser.
“What is the meaning of this?” David demanded, his voice echoing across the porch. “Do you have any idea who my family is? You can’t just show up here without an appointment.”
“Mr. Vance, I’m Detective Miller with the city police department,” Miller said calmly, stepping forward and flashing his badge. “We have a warrant to search this premises in connection with corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and child endangerment.”
“That’s absurd! This is a malicious fabrication by a bitter ex-wife!” David shouted, his composure finally cracking as panic bled into his voice. He reached instinctively for the inner pocket of his robe, perhaps looking for a phone to call his attorneys.

“Step away from the door, Mr. Vance,” Miller ordered sharply, signaling the deputies to move in. “You have the right to remain silent.”
From behind David, the tall figure of Margaret appeared in the hallway, draped in a matching silk robe. Her face was a mask of cold fury as she watched her son being placed in handcuffs. She looked directly past the officers, locking eyes with Clara through the open window of the police cruiser. Even in defeat, Margaret’s gaze promised endless retaliation, but Clara did not look away. She simply stared back, knowing that the empire of lies was finally crumbling to dust.
