Chapter 10: The Courthouse Steps

The courthouse steps were crowded with local journalists, camera crews, and curious onlookers, all drawn by the sensational news of the Vance family’s sudden downfall. Microphones thrust forward like hungry birds as Clara walked up the wide stone steps, flanked by Marcus and Detective Miller. She wore a simple navy blue blazer and black trousers, her long blonde hair tied back in a neat ponytail. She looked calm, composed, and entirely unfazed by the flashing camera bulbs.
Inside the grand courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. David sat at the defense table beside a high-priced corporate attorney who looked visibly stressed, frantically flipping through legal briefs trying to find a loophole to argue for immediate bail. Across the aisle, Margaret sat in the front row of the gallery, maintaining a stiff, rigid posture, though her eyes betrayed a quiet panic as the judge entered the room.
“All rise,” the bailiff announced loudly, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings.
Judge Hernandez, a severe-looking man with decades of judicial experience, took his seat behind the mahogany bench. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the extensive documentation piled high in front of him before looking out over the courtroom.
“We are here for the arraignment of David Vance on charges of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and associated financial fraud,” Judge Hernandez began, his voice deep and resonant. “In addition, the court has received supplementary emergency filings regarding child endangerment and psychological abuse.”
The defense attorney immediately stood up. “Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of all charges due to procedural overreach, and request standard release on personal recognizance for my client—”
“Denied, counsel,” Judge Hernandez interrupted flatly, not even looking up from his files. “The financial audit provided by the prosecution details a calculated, multi-million-dollar fraud scheme involving international shell accounts. Furthermore, the photographic and testimonial evidence regarding the endangerment of a minor makes the defendant a severe flight risk and a danger to the community.”
A murmur rippled through the gallery. David slumped slightly in his chair, finally realizing that his family’s money and influence could not buy their way out of this courtroom.

“Bail is denied,” Judge Hernandez continued, bringing his gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed like a gunshot. “The defendant will be remanded to county custody pending trial. Court is adjourned.”
Clara let out a long, slow breath, feeling the invisible weight that had crushed her chest for months finally begin to lift. She turned around to look at the gallery. Margaret sat motionless in her seat, staring blindly at the empty bench, completely alone in a room that had once bowed to her every command.
