Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Garden

The live video feed from the Sterling estate showed Helena wandering aimlessly across the manicured lawns like a deranged specter. The once-feared matriarch looked completely unraveled, her hair disheveled, her dark patterned dress stained with dirt from digging in her own prized rosebeds. In her right hand, she gripped the blue plastic bucket—the very same bucket she had used to humiliate Clara less than twenty-four hours ago.
Inside the matte-black luxury car, Clara leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she watched the monitor. Every lingering phantom of her past trauma crystallized into sharp, actionable rage.
"She's looking for the ledger," David observed quietly, watching Helena fall to her knees beside the marble fountain and begin frantically clawing at the soil. "She knows federal investigators are closing in on the estate's physical archives. If she unearths those offshore paper trails, she's facing decades behind bars right alongside Julian."
Clara did not answer immediately. She unlocked her tablet, pulled up a restricted municipal zoning map, and tapped a specific parcel of land adjacent to the Sterling property.
"She won't find anything out there," Clara said coldly. "I had the physical backup vaults cleared out at 3:00 AM while she was busy screaming at her lawyers. Those papers are already sitting in a secure lockbox at the District Attorney's office."
David looked at her in surprise, a low whistle escaping his lips. "You anticipated she’d try to destroy the evidence herself? Clara, you're playing chess while everyone else is playing a game they don't even know the rules to."
"It's not chess, David. It's an execution," Clara replied, her voice devoid of any warmth. She swiped to a different folder on her encrypted screen, revealing a digitized medical report dated twelve years ago—the exact year her father, a brilliant tech pioneer, had supposedly driven his car off a coastal cliff in a tragic accident.
David leaned closer to read the document headers. "Wait... this is the county coroner’s preliminary toxicology report. It was sealed by a federal judge under a national security clause. How did you get your hands on this?"
"Because my father wasn't drunk, and his brakes didn't fail," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed fury. "Helena was the primary shareholder of my father's competing startup before it was forcefully acquired by Vance-Sterling Holdings for pennies on the dollar. She didn't just ruin him financially. This report proves she injected a paralytic agent into his bloodstream before staging the crash."
The air inside the luxury car grew deathly still. David stared at Clara, the full, terrifying scope of her mission finally dawning on him. This was never just a messy divorce or a corporate hostile takeover. This was a blood feud spanning over a decade, executed with chilling, surgical precision.
"If you have this proof," David said carefully, "why haven't you handed it directly to the homicide division?"
"Because a quick arrest is too easy," Clara replied, her gaze fixed entirely on the live video feed of Helena sobbing hysterically in the dirt. "If she goes straight to prison, she suffers for a few years in a comfortable white-collar facility. I want her to experience everything my father felt. I want her to lose her wealth, her status, her freedom, and every single person she ever trusted, piece by agonizing piece, until she has nothing left to hold onto."
As if responding to her words, the screen showed a second black luxury vehicle pulling up to the gates of the Sterling estate. Two men in unmarked gray suits stepped out, carrying heavy steel lockboxes and legal notices. They bypassed the front doors entirely and headed straight toward Helena in the garden.
David’s phone buzzed sharply against his thigh. He pulled it out, glanced at the caller ID, and frowned.
"Clara, we have a complication," David warned, holding the phone out. "That's not the FBI at the gates. That's Victor Vance... Marcus's older brother and the primary legal counsel for the international crime syndicate that secretly funded Julian’s initial corporate acquisitions."
Clara’s eyes flashed with dangerous interest. "Victor Vance doesn't care about Julian or Helena. He cares about his dirty money tied up in Vanguard's frozen accounts."
"Exactly," David said grimly. "And if he finds Helena before the marshals do, he won't hesitate to silence her permanently to protect his own offshore syndicates."
Clara didn't hesitate for a single second. She reached out and grabbed the door handle of the car.
"Where are you going?" David asked, alarmed.
May you like
"To meet our new guest," Clara said calmly, pushing the door open into the cold morning wind.
