Chapter 1 - The First Drop

The water from the blue bucket chilled Clara to her very bones, soaking through the intricate layers of imported white lace and plastering her wet brown hair across her forehead. She stood in the gleaming, opulent hallway of the Sterling estate, shivering slightly, yet her expression remained carved from pure, unyielding stone.
Helena Sterling, the matriarch who ruled the household with an iron fist and a frozen heart, lowered the empty plastic bucket. Helena’s dark patterned dress rustled as she stepped closer, her tone dripping with calculated malice.
"You're the wife now. Wash it," Helena said, her voice echoing off the marble pillars.
Clara did not flinch, nor did she cower. Instead, she raised her chin, her tear-filled, cold eyes locking onto Helena's with a terrifying clarity. She realized with absolute certainty that this house was nothing more than a gilded cage designed to break her spirit.
Slowly, deliberately, Clara slid the heavy diamond wedding band from her finger. She held it up for a fraction of a second before letting it drop onto the hard marble floor. The sharp metallic clink resonated in the tense silence.
"That was the last time you touched me," Clara said softly, her voice steady and chillingly calm.
Julian Sterling, standing near the doorway in his tailored dark suit and dark shirt, watched with a stern and controlled expression. He thought he held all the cards, assuming his bride was completely dependent on his family’s immense wealth and social standing.
Clara turned her back on them without a moment of hesitation. She walked over to where her leather luggage sat packed and waiting. Bending down, she gripped the handle of her main suitcase and hoisted it up, her muscles straining slightly under the weight.
"In one week you'll crawl back begging me!" Julian shouted, his ego bruised by her absolute silence.
Clara kept walking toward the massive double doors, her footsteps echoing with finality. She pushed them open into the cool night air. The sleek black luxury car was waiting at the curb, its engine idling quietly in the darkness.
As she stepped outside, the driver handed her a thick manila envelope containing a divorce filing and an asset protection order. Clara took it with one hand while pulling her smartphone from her pocket with the other, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
"David, come now," she whispered urgently into the phone.

Before David could answer, a shadow detached itself from the hedge beside the driveway, and a cold hand grabbed Clara’s shoulder.
