Chapter 2: Shadows in the Lobby

Long before the first guest arrived at the Grand Belmont, the administrative underbelly of the hotel was already humming with quiet tension. Victoria stood behind the polished mahogany front desk, her black blazer buttoned neatly over her black top, adjusting her small hoop earrings with fingers that barely shook. She had spent the last three hours coordinating luggage transfers, managing difficult catering demands, and fielding endless requests from the bride’s mother. Yet, Victoria’s focus was entirely elsewhere. Her phone, resting face-down beside the computer terminal, buzzed with a silent text message notification. It was a single emoji: a green square. That was the signal.

When the grand glass doors swung open to admit the glowing bride, Victoria had braced herself. Clara entered like a conquering hero, her sheer lace sleeves sweeping gracefully as she approached the counter with an unearned air of superiority. Victoria remembered the exact cadence of Clara's voice, the condescending warmth plastered across her face when she delivered her ultimatum about who mattered and who did not. Victoria had simply smiled, played her part, and handed over the designated white gift box that had been dropped off by an anonymous courier at the loading dock two hours prior.

The strategy had been laid out days in advance by someone who understood the fragile architecture of Clara's social standing. Victoria was merely an employee executing a protocol, but she possessed a front-row seat to the unfolding drama. As Clara walked away toward her bridesmaids, Victoria picked up her phone, dialed a pre-set extension, and walked briskly toward the exit. The weight of the black blazer felt comforting against her spine as she pushed open the heavy glass doors and stepped out into the cool evening air.

On the other end of the line, a calm, measured voice answered before the second ring. "Is it delivered?" the voice asked.

"It's in her hands," Victoria replied softly, her eyes scanning the valet loop for any sign of interference. "She just opened it."

"Good. Let the evening proceed according to plan," the voice instructed before disconnecting.

Victoria slipped her phone into her pocket and took a deep, centering breath. She looked back through the glass at the sparkling lobby, where the pink-clad bridesmaids were still chatting innocently, completely unaware that the foundation of the entire event was built on sand. Victoria knew secrets that could ruin careers, marriages, and fortunes overnight. Working hospitality in a luxury hotel meant seeing humanity stripped of its polite veneer, but rarely did a takedown feel so poetic. She turned her back on the lobby and walked toward the staff lounge, leaving the high-stakes theater to play out its inevitable, devastating climax.
