Chapter 10: Walking Out into the Night

The decision to leave the Grand Belmont without looking back came as easily as drawing a breath. Clara instructed the remaining staff to pack up the remaining gifts and cancel the catering contracts, ensuring that every vendor was paid directly from her personal account, independent of Julian’s frozen assets. She refused to let innocent workers suffer the collateral damage of her ex-fiancé’s financial crimes.

As she walked toward the main lobby in her immaculate white lace wedding gown—minus the veil—the remaining guests avoided her gaze, whispering behind cupped hands. Clara didn't care. She held her head high, not with the arrogant pride she had worn upon entering the hotel hours earlier, but with a quiet, hard-won dignity. She had survived the most public humiliation of her life, and in doing so, she had been liberated from a gilded cage.

Passing the front desk, Clara noticed that Victoria was back at her terminal, managing a check-in with effortless professionalism. Clara paused for a moment, stepping out of the stream of departing bridesmaids.

Victoria looked up, her expression neutral, her dark hair still neatly pinned in its bun beneath the soft lighting of the lobby.

"Victoria," Clara said, her voice clear and sincere.

"Yes, Ms. Sterling?" Victoria replied politely, maintaining the boundary of hotel staff and guest.

"Thank you," Clara said simply.

Victoria held her gaze for a second, a faint, understanding smile touching the corners of her mouth. "You're welcome. Have a safe evening, Clara."

With that final exchange, Clara turned and pushed open the heavy double glass doors, stepping out into the crisp Chicago autumn air. The media van parked across the street flashed its hazard lights, and a reporter stepped forward with a microphone, calling out her name. Clara didn't run, nor did she hide her face. She walked steadily down the stone steps toward a waiting cab, the long lace sleeves of her gown brushing against the cool pavement. The fairy tale was over, but her real life was finally beginning.
