Chapter 6: Unsealing the Past

The manila envelope felt heavier than lead as Maya extended it toward Julian, bypassing Elena entirely. The clerk’s hands shook as he accepted the thick packet, his eyes darting nervously between the document and Elena’s murderous glare.
“Open it,” Maya instructed quietly, her voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a scalpel. “Read the first page aloud so everyone in this lobby understands exactly how the empire they are enjoying was financed.”
Julian swallowed hard, broke the red wax seal—a relic of old-world corporate correspondence that the founders had insisted upon for sensitive legal instruments—and pulled out a thick stack of heavy linen paper. The first page bore the official letterhead of the Zurich Medical Consortium, dated precisely thirty-six months ago.
“‘I, Dr. Harold Vance, attending physician of record,’” Julian began, his voice cracking slightly before clearing with a nervous cough, “‘do hereby attest that the medical incapacitation of Arthur Somor was artificially induced using a slow-acting neurotoxin, administered under the direct instruction of my niece, Elena Vance, for the purpose of coercing a fraudulent corporate restructuring...’”
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered crowd of guests and staff. Several journalists, who had been lingering near the lounge waiting for a celebrity arrival, immediately raised their cameras and began recording the audio feed.
Elena lunged forward like a striking viper, aiming to snatch the incriminating document straight from Julian’s hands. But Maya was faster than she looked. Despite her battered knees, she stepped into Elena’s path, using her shoulder to block the executive’s momentum and sending Elena stumbling back against the polished marble pillar.
“Ah-ah,” Maya warned, her eyes flashing with cold steel. “Destroying evidence in front of fifty witnesses and a live automated broadcast system is generally frowned upon by the Securities and Exchange Commission.”
Elena righted herself, her suit jacket slightly askew, her blonde hair coming loose from its tight chignon. The immaculate, untouchable corporate queen was gone, replaced by a desperate woman staring into the abyss of her own total ruin. She knew that once Dr. Vance’s confession became public record, the federal indictments would follow within hours. Her offshore accounts, her real estate holdings, her social standing—everything she had ruthlessly murdered and schemed for would evaporate overnight.

“You think a forged confession from a disgraced, dead doctor will stand up in court?” Elena hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper, intended for Maya’s ears alone. “He died of a heart attack two years ago in a Swiss sanatorium. Dead men don’t testify, Maya.”
“No, they don't,” Maya replied smoothly, stepping closer until they were eye-to-eye. “Which is why he recorded a video deposition on an encrypted server with a dead-man’s switch set to release to the Department of Justice the moment my biometric signature is denied access to this mainframe. In fact, it should be hitting the federal wire services in approximately three, two, one...”
