Chapter 4: Echoes in the Lobby

Realizing that the conversation at the table was drawing too much unwanted attention from the surrounding patrons, Clara stood up from her chair, the silver silk dress catching the light as she moved. She carefully picked up the wooden clipboard, sliding the bank statement back inside its leather sleeve. Julian remained seated, paralyzed by a mixture of panic and humiliation, his dark tie slightly askew against his crisp white shirt.
"We are leaving," Clara announced quietly, her tone leaving no room for argument. She looked over at her mother. "Mom, let’s go to the lobby. The air in here is suffocating."
Martha nodded slowly, adjusting her hold on little Lily, who yawned softly against her shoulder. As Clara walked away from the table, Julian scrambled to his feet, knocking his napkin onto the floor. He hurried after her, his stride awkward and hurried, desperate to regain control of the narrative before she could pack her bags and leave him permanently. The maitre d' stepped forward, noticing Julian following the women without paying the bill, but Clara turned back with a cold, authoritative glance that stopped the man in his tracks.
"Put the bill on Mr. Vance’s tab," Clara said smoothly. "He has plenty of funds to cover it tonight, according to his bank."
Julian flushed crimson, muttering an apology to the staff as he hurried past them into the spacious, marble-floored lobby of the restaurant. The lobby was quiet, featuring a large stone fountain in the center and plush velvet armchairs arranged in quiet corners. Martha walked over to a secluded seating area near a tall potted palm, gently rocking Lily to keep her calm while the adults hashed out their ruined evening. Clara stood by the edge of the fountain, watching the water ripple over the polished stones, her reflection distorted and fractured by the movement.
"Clara, please, stop walking away from me," Julian said, stepping into her line of sight, his hands raised in a gesture of supplication. "You’re acting on impulse. You’re destroying our marriage over a financial hurdle that we can fix together. I have contacts. I have assets that are tied up right now. Just give me one week to liquidate them, and I’ll put every cent back into your account."
Clara turned to face him, her eyes burning with a controlled fire that terrified him more than screaming ever could. "You don't have assets, Julian. You have debts. Massive, hidden debts that you’ve accumulated through lies and deception. You’ve been living a double life for over a year, and I have the text messages, the hotel receipts, and the bank statements to prove every single word of it. You thought I was naive, that I would stay home changing diapers while you played the high-rolling bachelor on the weekends."
May you like
Julian froze, his mouth opening slightly. "What... what do you mean, text messages?"
"I mean I hired a private investigator last month," Clara said evenly, her voice devoid of emotion. "I needed to know why my husband couldn't look me in the eye anymore. I needed to know why our joint account was constantly empty despite your promotion. The fifteen thousand dollars on that clipboard is just the tip of the iceberg, Julian. The rest of the truth is waiting for you back at the house."
